We'll see soon enough what happens to the labour supply. Its not cheap labour BTW, at least minimum wage is on offer*, its just that feckless english chavs aren't prepared to work for it. When the fruit and veg doesn't get picked, lies rotting in the fields, when grannies arse doesn't get wiped in the nursing home, there'll be a different song sung. *not denying some gang masters etc aren't ripping off the workers and paying below that, that's wrong and a different issue. In truth Jim machines exist to dick all fruit and veg, remembering years ago I picked potatoes and peas, it was a back breaking job and mechanisation to do those jobs is not a bad thing. So 2020 and even strawberries can be picked by machine which again if you importing labour isnt a bad thing because low paid workers take more than they give when you take all their costs into consideration

Whereas Tony Blair importing an army of third-world labour and/or natural-born thieves from the far banks of the River Oder because of the cut-price employment opportunities for his wealthy chums didn't screw us over at all obviously. Not to forget that he spawned the 'compensation culture' that has made everything more expensive, and ripped out part of people's souls. Not for the benefit of his lawyer wife, I'm sure.

It's the same issue. Talking of 'issues' what about the Romanian gypsies buying up & distributing all of The Big Issues and stealing even that piece of cold comfort from Britain's homeless? Also, why should the 'minimum wage' be OK? It's certainly not good enough for the likes of politicians! If its wrong migrating to another country to seek work, stealing jobs and wives from locals what are you doing in Finland. Exactly the same as a Pole coming here. Two faced twat. It's the employers who set the wage rates these days, in non unionised industries. Campaign against them. Wages are set by markets, not employers. The only exception is the minimum wage, set by government. It's probably time for the minimum wage to be re-branded. Minimum, not a very positive message. I don't like living wage, everybody faces different costs, humanity is not one mass of same-ness. How about a universal wage instead? Universal, that's more positive than minimum. And, given that more and more jobs pay minimum wage, because they can, due to the influx of millions of people with low wage expectations, the universal wage has a ring of truth about it.

I didn't come here as cheap labour, and I didn't come here to get a fake job selling The Big Issue so I could then be entitled to claim benefits. I didn't steal a wife, I was already married to a Finn, and it was her idea that we move from England to the UK. It's not the same as "a Pole coming here" because Finland was not in the EU thirty years ago - I needed a work permit and a residence permit - there was no breaching of the flood gates as there was when the poor eastern European countries joined the EU and were happy to see their dregs of society run away to the richer countries. But we have gone through this before... and you are just being... a git.

Just why aren't the fruit picked by machine, every farmer I hear on the news is saying they need migrant labour, the lazy English won't get up at 4am to pick while it's cool, they are slow too. As for closed shops, I never mentioned them, I don't agree with them. What a po faced lot you are, not appreciating a good joke.

I used to pick potatoes as dad grew them..I had the bottom half of the field as it was sodden and yucky(spuds were rubbish down that end) ..my sis was always allocated top end of field... I would go home plastered in mud as i always crawled up and down on all fours dragging wire basket.... When I was naughty dad used to send me to pick stones off the same field..I hated that field. The only good bit was the few allotments, one guy grew raspberries and I remember cutting the netting with a pen knife to help myself.. Don't think Ive got the right attitude to be a fruit picker.

" 'Just not true' we're too lazy for farm work, say frustrated UK applicants" "Jobseekers take issue with pay and terms and allege farmers favouring migrant labour" "British applicants for jobs harvesting crops have said farmers have made it virtually impossible for them to secure the work despite a national appeal for a “land army” to save the UK’s fruit and vegetables." “It seems it is very much geared up for migrant labour." It's in The Guardian so it must be true: www.theguardian.com/money/2020/apr/20/just-not-true-were-too-lazy-for-farm-work-say-frustrated-uk-applicants

When I applied to work on a farm for the summer, as I have no income, I was told that all vacancies had been filled. Make of that what you will. You were too late applying? Maybe. On the other hand had my name been Piotrek or Gregorz I might be lifting spuds right now, rather than typing this meaningless message. Anyway, I take offence to the suggestion that I, being British, am lazy. This suggestion is just as bad as one that Pakistanis are habitual liars. It's been said that I'm not the fastest but once I get going there's no stopping me. I'm known for it.
