How do you know the cows didn't have paddles and beat it down with those?

This was discussed in one of my Top Level sessions at the Didcot HQ in August 2017 and the general view was that it is improbable.

But if these boats were operating in a pure free market economy then the owners would be prepared to pay for the cost of dredging as this would be less than the extra profits to be made from running deeper draughted boats. But this is the problem with both waterway and rail transport, it's not the cost of running the vehicles which makes it unviable, it's the cost of maintaining the infrastructure. Dredging a canal is an enormously expensive and never-ending operation, and sand pays a very small per-tonne profit. That's why road transport is such a good idea because roads are built for all those people who like to roll around in cars. I expect if the trucking companies had to pay for the roads there would be no roads. It's difficult to know where to start with this. When I ran my own truck I paid around £50,000 a year in fuel duty and £20,000 a year in VAT on diesel. I spent around £100,000 a year on diesel. Did this cover the cost of maintaining the road surface I damaged? I don't know. Probably. But even if it didn't and fuel taxes were massively increased, then this would only have been passed on to the consumer at the shop till. Transport companies make on average 3% profit on turnover so it wouldn't be simply a case of them "sucking it up".

Has anyone heard from TonyDunkley lately? Maybe he is brown bread. I'm sure he would have something to say about dredging in this context. His laptop is playing up so he has decided to leave it on the stern deck for three weeks to see if that helps.

HS2 will be electric anything that cleans up travel gets my vote, also it will take freight of the road another plus in my books No it won't. Roads are cheaper for freight - ask any Eastern European lorry driver! If you hadn't noticed, the West Coast Main Line has been electrified since the 1960s. WCML is full, that's why we need more. Doh!

"However, the fact you are now attempting to talk shit about it on a forum is noted, and subsequently bungled into the coal scuttle." Seems some tings get past your beady little eyes. By the style of the above, I think you can latch on as to who said it.
