Everyone who went to a proper school knows that dinner is served around 8pm and the daytime meal is “luncheon”. Not so. People who went to a proper school understand that "dinner" is derived from the French "déjeuner" meaning a meal eaten at mid-day. But we are not French. It means the main meal of the day. When one has that, is dependant upon one’s class.

Evening meal or tea, yes, and the use of "supper" is correct here too, it is derived from "souper" and does refer to a bowl of soup or some other very light snack eaten shortly before bedtime, not a full-blown meal. Fish supper in Glasgow means fish and chips - not soup - and is normally eaten before starting on the Tennants! In Scotland generally. Adding “supper” after whatever you have ordered just means you want chips with it.

Anyway, a very large Barnsley Chop for me tonight (already nearly had a heart attack when told the price!). To be served with garlic n rosemary mini roasts, creamed leeks and buttered thyme carrots.
I'll post a picture IF it looks as good as it sounds...

Some years ago, Jane and I went to the Red Lion at Cropredy and had a fantastic meal ... lamb shank with all the trimmings ... and for some reason they were doing a promotion and it was only £5 a head ... great meal ... unbelievable price. I told a mate who called with his wife the week after on the appropriate 'offer' night. He told me later he made a Freudian slip when ordering and asked for a ham shank ... the waiter just about exploded ... and he could hear the whole pub laughing several minutes later when the waiter reported back Rog

Well, tonight I had two bags of Marmite crisps and some Cantonese satay chicken sticks from the Deli counter at Morrisons. All washed down with the finest Perła Mocna super-strength lager.

Dinner dinner dinner dinner dinner dinner dinner dinner BATMAN!One’s Batman only brings dinner if one is an officer in the military, otherwise it’s the butler (or maybe the footmen if you are posh). I seem to recall you left the military some time ago and it’s hard to imagine you were of an officer type disposition.
