On your second point, the whole thing is a compromise, there is no black and white, no right and wrong. If the only aim was to protect the NHS and minimise the spread of the virus, then of course all schools and businesses would be closed. But that aim clashes with the education of future adults and the preservation of as much of the economy as we can. So it has to be a compromise, we have to look at risk/benefit. The “risk” of you not seeing your mum for a while is relatively low, the benefit is that the spread of the virus to vulnerable people is reduced. On you third point, it would only be your decision if you agreed in advance that if you or she got the virus badly, you would just die quietly at home and not expect any medical treatment. But that isn’t really compatible with our current societal values and that is why it is not your decision - because you making the wrong decision has a potentially massive impact on other people. Oh and FYI, whilst we had been planning to spend Christmas Day with my mother, that is no longe happening. She is of course stoic, far worse things have happened in her lifetime than missing one Christmas with her children - like her brother being killed in WW2. "If the aim (of all these measures) was to protect the NHS" ... what other aim(s) could there be then? Anyone who can't see other agendas have been pushed through off the back of Covid need their eyes and ears testing. I'm with you on the rest but I also need to vent sometimes. One thing I have taken from my mum and Chris's mum is how much worse things were in WW2. I just hope that war wasn't fought in vain. Notwithstanding your need to vent, which I fully understand and support, clearly I didn't explain myself properly. The aim of all these measures was/is to strike a compromise between protecting the NHS, protecting the economy / jobs, and protecting mental health. I will agree that there is a lot of badwagon-jumping by non-governmental agencies and companies who relish the excuse of Covid to justify their unrelated failings and desires to economise by reducing staffing to a level below which adequate customer service can be supplied. It is the new excuse. Previously it was "Elf and safety", before that it was "insurance" and now it is "coronavirus". Which I find quite annoying!

...there's always going to be something Nick. So long as we try to do the right thing (or was it left?) that's the best we can do.

Another interesting NHS stat for November is that the total number of A&E attendances was by far the lowest for November over the last 5 years. www.england.nhs.uk/statistics/statistical-work-areas/ae-waiting-times-and-activity/Now our government have yet again today demoralised us at a key moment of hope, I can't see my 100 year old mum, my kids, my grandchildren. Yet a teacher can mix with 30 kids from different families, an office worker can mix with several collegues from different families, and bring the virus back to grandad or grandma. Sorry I'm now thinking this is bollocks. It's all about taking away our freedom and hope. Would you rather see her at Christmas and kill her

Maybe they should just cull children of secondary school age.

"Bad- wagon jumping" indeed. Sue the NHS. Brag about what your husband got? We all appreciate what Jeff DID when he worked there - I worked for the NHS in East London for a few years - but then it dawned on me what people like MJG (and them/you - of all people? ) were about. Sorry - tis the season of goodwill. Clearly, just like you, I didn't explain myself properly. Keep safe, everyone - what goes around comes around (we hope) x

Would you rather see her at Christmas and kill her I'd like to see her on Christmas day, but I don't want to kill her. I've always tried to visit her every few weeks since she moved into her bungalow in the 80s. If you remember, we went to see her in the first lockdown. She wanted a hug and she's still alive.

Hope you're OK, seriously.
"Bat soup " as like to you refer to me has just embarked on an 80 mile and 50 lock mission to get her engine fixed before serious lockdown!
Daft old bat!
Just made leek & potato soup ready for lunch en route tomorrow. Sorry, bread was cooked this morning so won't be hot out of the oven but.... I can spare a bowl (even for you) if you're in the vicinity...
Take care x

Reading for the third time I’m tending towards the latter, but not sure what your motivation is.

Sadly, my boys won't be able to visit me over Christmas and give me a hug. Personally I'd rather they could and I took my chances on dying from it.
But then I suppose that if I wanted to live in a free country where families can meet up then I should fuck off and live in North Korea.

Does North Korea take immigrants ?
It's an interesting possibility but I feel not that feasible.
Of course your Iranian embassy thing might enable entry on a work permit.

The East do seem to be better at the family concept. Maybe we are the result of a damaged family.

The UK is screwed because we aligned ourselves with the US in world war two and deliberately won the war.
If we had boxed clever and deliberately lost like the Germans did then we would now be an economic basket case like Germany and we would all be taking German in the same way that Germans are all talking English to each other on account of us beating them in the war.
