Boats on mains electric are ideal for heat pumps, lots of water around you to extract the heat from. Keel cooling tanks are great for the job, my own rads are only warm most of the time and the boat remains cosy. I think we were discussing the other day how one KW of electric gets you 4-5 KW of heat not a bad exchange. Philip Waller a school mate of mine has had his system for years says its the best thing he ever did, along with the huge solar system, he is one of a number of friends that has gone that way for heating.
I think with guaranteed shore power then (at least for now) a heat pump could be good from an efficiency point of view ...... however it does tie you to a monopoly supply for your heating. Like the set up on Sabina, you would have to have a plan "B". ....... I think I have always had a bit of a "survivalist" attitude* to life and always have a back up plan if it is at all possible
* that kind of showed up with the mark I lockdown when I did no panic buying (only really stocked up on milk eggs and fruit) and emerged weeks later with emergency "Iron" ration part of the cupboard almost intact
Same here John 2 ways of heating the boat, a heat pump would just be a third way as long as on shore power. My emergency food supply is still intact as well just being turned over as time goes on

So what do the nay sayers propose as an alternative then? Burying your head in the sand leaves your arse in the air for a good kicking. My view is that those that can do something should. Travelling by air for relief work etc is a different matter to going abroad for a jolly. With luck Jim air travel will be to expensive after the virus, I am hoping for the airline companies/builders to go under around the world, it would be a start to saving the world That would be nice. Make things a bit quieter as well. I've not been in a commercial airline since about 1992 and not intending to ever be in a flying machine again. I did spend some time in a horrible Cessna because my mad sister wanted to do a flying experience and dragged me along. Mid nineties. Never have I been in such a horrendous and unpleasant contraption in all my life!! Horrid.

All these handouts are great on the face of things. whether that be people's wages, the food bills of parents, people's heat pumps or a multitude of other handouts. Who is going to pay for these things, or is the intention not to pay for them? You, I, and many others pay for them. I don’t really begrudge those that apply for, and accept them. Does piss me off that Jim takes every given opportunity to slag off the government, but then accepts their handouts. Such hypocrisy from someone who tends to suggest he has principles. Typical labourite with no morals. Better to question than to lick Boris arse. I support what little he's doing, he could do more. However, the global warming issue needs action, what are you doing, other than contributing more hot air and making it worse?

No other word for that other than hypocrite. I’m doing my bit, but without fooling myself into believing it will make any difference whatsoever, and without taking handouts whilst slagging off the hand giving it to me. However, I am probably doing a lot more than you in attempting to reduce my footprint. I gave up my car, you didn’t. Today I have used energy totally supplied from solar, you haven’t. Just these two items alone suggest I do more than yourself.

The thing with air source heat pumps is that they need a fan to push air through the radiator, and they can be noisy. There is one on a building near us - when I say near, I mean about 200 yds away. In the still of night you can hear the faint low frequency rumbling of this fan despite it not even being in line of sight. If I was going for a heat pump type thingy, I'd go for ground source. Although I suppose you do need a fairly big bit of land for that to work.
Cost-wise, whilst you can get 3 or 4 times more heat out than electricity you put in, a modern high efficiency gas boiler is cheaper to run per kw of heat put into the house because gas is about 6 times cheaper than electricity per kwh. And a lot less faffy.
OK if you can run your heat pump from renewabe leccy (solar, wind, hydro) then it is "green" but we all get the same leccy out of the plug, some is green, some is nuclear and some is fossil fuel derived, at about 25% efficiency.

I have been considering what to do post gas boiler...but unsure what is eco friendly and economic ..do those words belong in the same sentence? I was talking to someone recently about biomass boilers. They are very expensive and very big, so can't be hung on the wall. And apparently there are no spares available for them, and hardly anyone is trained to maintain/service them. And the "green fuel pellets" come by ship from Canada. Green?

I have a car to get swmbo about and to shift large stuff etc for work, but use it no more than I have to, using the bike mostly. Best of all, I don't spout insults, bile and venom at any opportunity, especially at Christmas. BTW the "handout" for the heating system is enabling us to use our own money to put one in another house. I presume you object, as a psychophantic Friend of Bozzer, to any support for anyone with a disability. As for pointing out Tory faults, misdemeanours, lies and greed, I'll be more than happy to hush up if you take the job on. It is an easy job after all.

Greener than burning coal or gas. We see the Drax trains every day, Liverpool to Drax power station. It's a stop gap measure.

No need for air source if on a boat, just throw a net of thin pipework in the cut.

Will there be sufficient surface area though, I looked up the size of garden needed for groundsource pipework layed in trenches and it's a fair amount. peterboat, are you taking advantage of the grant? Solar thermal uses up the 5k nicely, with the 20% ? contribution, coming in at around 7k. Or are you virtually (virtuously?) off grid already?
