We joined FOTRN and used a couple of the moorings in August. Is the Great Doddington one brand new. That was not listed in August I think. On the way down we went from the EA mooring at washlands the the ski club in one hop which was farther than we would have chosen. On the way back up we stopped overnight at White Mills marina. Yes, it's the latest addition.

I agree with the OP the Nene is a great cruising river and we have enjoyed our trips on it in the past. Like any river there are less spots to moor than on the canal but that is not surprising it is just the nature of a river with no towpath. We always found space enough we did have to breast up with another boat on one of the Northampton moorings but that was fine. Been here two years and some of those locations could be written in Swahili... ! Get yourself an OS map

Some of the info on the Imray Nene and Great Ouse guides is well out of date, good for a rough idea though.

Friend's of the River Nene are now responsible for the previously unofficial moorings adjacent to Alwalton Lock.

The Nene, the Great Ouse and all tributaries should not be neglected. We had a great time last summer.

Would be good to see the EA dredge The nene at becketts park Northampton. As all I can see is ducks paddling lol and big boulders in the water stopping boats from mooring up too the park wall. Unless there's reason for this

Would be good to see the EA dredge The nene at becketts park.as all I can see is ducks paddleing and big boulders in the water stopping boats from mooring up too the park wall. The boulders have been there since the 80's, the same as at Wellingborough past what was the paddling pool. As for dredging, don't hold your breath! I've never known it dredged. They also have failed to spot dredge at any of the shoals that have built up over the last few years, Alwalton had snared many hapless visitors en route to 'doing the Ouse' The most important thing for the EA is to never let an incident like the Easter 98 floods happen again, with this in mind all the money in the last 15 or so years has been spent in the upper catchment area, the navigation budget has been squeezed year on year

noratrace, Get yourself to the Thomas A Becket and have a look at the plaque on the fireplace, it marks the level flood water reached in Easter '98 - it's the best visual indicator you will find in town (along with good grub and a decent pint. The river runs around the back of the pub, thru the council yard and under Westbridge next door to the Frog Island brewery and the petrol station, stop and have a pause to think how high up it came! Jimmy's end and Far Cotton were hit really hard.

I missed this post John, yes you are correct, it was late summer they got Great Doddington up and running. Heading for Northampton we have variously stopped at Rushden & Diamonds, Wellingborough, Great Doddington (pre FOTRN) Earls Barton (pre White Millls Marina) On other occasions we've done it in one from NBC to MNCC, 10 solid hours cruising will do it, but we have since stopped the mad rush now the dwarf is here.

Thanks Gazza for the very helpful list and the link! It is our intention to cruise the River Nene and surrounding waters, Cam, Ouse etc next year, for a month or two, before Largo goes in to have her makeover (paint job). However, Largo, being 70 ft long, we are aware of a tight corner or two, but we would hate to go up a navigation and be unable to turn around and have to go miles backwards to be able to do so. I have looked and failed to find any Cruising Maps or Guides like our Pearson's and Nicholson's available. Are there any publications available on any of the navigation's that a cruising boat of that length would find invaluable in that area? Thanks Nipper The Imray books are OK if a little outdated in terms of things like taps etc. They are reasonably accurate in terms of Max craft dimensions. available for the Middle levels also. Plenty of 70' boats have been before so you can take heart in that. No issues for you on the Nene. Tina will sort you out at Stanground joining the ML, likewise Paul at Salters. In terms of the GT Ouse Tributary all have room to turn at the head of navigation, you will find some tight naddgy bends on the rivers though! The lodes I haven't done, I understand you can turn a 70' at Reach Lode end. No issues up to Bedford at all. Good luck!
