One thing that is confusing me, as I understand it the common cold is a corona virus. So how come the pharmaceutical industry has never found a cure for the cold, if they’ve found a cure for Covid-19 so rapidly?

It’s a bit like asking why a pet rabbit isn’t dangerous whereas a tiger is. After all, they are both animals. As I understand it, the genetic makeup of the common cold virus is much more varied and fluid (ie mutates much more) and so whilst you would be able to create a vaccine for one specific variant or maybe a group, all that would happen is that particular variant would die out and be replaced by other very similar but genetically different viruses. Let’s just hope covid doesn’t become as diverse as the common cold, otherwise we are screwed.

But it seems to be adapting okay.

I reckon if humans started eating too many rabbits and they felt extinction was coming they would throw a virus at us.
Animal extinction usually seems to be related to ones we don't eat.
Obviously the farmed animals are doing just fine due to the numbers but non-farmed animals being eaten by humans is a fairly basic evolutionary problem.
I'm still interested to know if there are farmed bats.
I somehow doubt it but it is possible.

Interestingly in the UK one must have a license to keep a healthy bat in captivity.
So if you want trouble free unlicensed bat as a pet it had to be unhealthy.
I wonder if having a pet bat with coronavirus would allow one to circumvent the licensing requirements.

The common cold virus mutates at a very fast pace, hence you can have more than one cold a year. The flu virus mutates every year to some extent but is treatable preventively by a broad antiviral vaccine that is altered slightly year on year. This is what will happen to CV19, we will develop vaccines to try to keep up with the inevitable mutations but it will be around for ever in one form or another. The best solution is for us to all stop breathing, impractical. Next best will be an acceptance of our future, a population density reduction and sense and sensibility in living with it. I think the reason that the UK has suffered so badly is social irresponsibility, being a small island with too many people, religious inflexibility, and being a hub for international travel.

Good theory. Plus possibly the high proportion of elderly people who are kept alive via medication when they would have already died otherwise. Maybe an advanced healthcare system comes with its own set of negative outcomes overall.
