ETA I assume one can steer this sort of unit with the sails ? Yes, this what is meant by the term 'motor-sailing'. I wondered, before I went sailing, just how a staysail works. Like motor-sailing the boat needs to continue to follow a sailing course (almost any direction except into the wind). A keel of some type would be good. Sounds obvious when you say it. Also, the technique of sailing without a rudder is part of the RYA course.

I now have my older sail back. The sail head flotation pocket is very good indeed, but the removal of the old sail numbers...disappointing. I expected to see a shadow of the old numbers but its much more than that...I'll post a pic soon. At least no-one in their right mind will want to nick it if I leave it on the boat as intended. In other news, I had the outboard bracket fitted by the chap who built this good boat. It has no chance of hitting the rudder which is fantastic. Motor-sailing is now a possibility. Or maybe just boring old motoring.

Looks good, take the sail off, stick a large solar panel (Spoiler) on and away you go, floating beer platform.

Looks good. Is that the type of motor mount that drops down or is it the dove tail type?

Might as well get the blacking done whilst she's out of the water old chap. Couple of anodes, nice cratch cover- perhaps a tunnel light.... Make a decent boat of it yet.

Although I have a boom tent, and when I've nailed all the other details my final trick will be to sort out the camping rig. I have a half-baked notion of a short mast which would get under around 50% of the bridges on the Thames but the reality is that if I want to go up the river then 100% motoring is probably the realistic option. I'd still sail as far as St Katherine's dock though.

But the issue revolves around the fact that the jib is the thing that keeps the whole plot upright and you effectively need two pairs of hands to do it. And its not something I would want to do several times a day, although it wouldn't be the first time the Thames has been sailed all the way.
