I bet Sustrans would love to tarmac the canal bed and make cycle megahighways. That would be an amazing project. I think you are right Andrew, think of the fun though putting boats sideways to block them in inaccessible places 35,000 of them

I do hate to be negative but. "A couple of boaters have said that the lock at Stanthorne on the Middlewich branch is expected to fail soon as the gate is bending so much that the paddle won't move and it is pouring water through the gate." Sorry. Was no worse last week when I passed through that it was last summer...

What "major works" ? There aren't any 'major works' for the navigation authority to do in relation to the canal itself, . . it's just a slip, a big one with a few trees and no doubt a good few hundred tons of soil blocking the cut, but scale aside it's no different from all the other countless numbers of slips that have been regularly blocking cuttings or wherever the land rises unusually steeply from the water's edge on the outside ever since the canals were first dug and opened. The more common minor, small scale slips were normally sorted out sufficiently to get boats by within hours of them happening, . . the bigger, more serious ones took up to a few days, depending on how far away the section dredger and piling gang were at the time. One of the main reasons for the canal still being closed to navigation where the slip has occurred is that C&RT's bad joke management don't have a clue how to go about fixing it, . . and nor do they have any of the necessary maintenance craft any more - they've been sold off on the cheap, . . or the staff to operate them - they've been got rid of because their experience and know how was a source of acute discomfort and embarrassment to the useless buggers who've been left to run the show nowadays. C&RT's so-called management also know that they can get away with doing sod all, . . every time, . . because they can rely on most of the mugs who buy boat Licences from them to tolerate being endlessly pissed about and not getting what they've paid for ! Undoubtably many of those CRT apologists who read this forum will say "Oh it's just another Tony Dunkley anti CRT rant" They shouldn't. Strip out the anger and frustration and the facts are very clear.
CRT have systematically got rid of the majority of the essential machinery and equipment and the skilled and knowledgeable persons that drove them in favour of a different form of management based on "modern" corporate methods. This has shown itself to be totally unable to run a 200 year old system successfully.
Unless the majority of boaters wake up, then in very few years there will be no canal system, just a disconnected remnant fit only for ducks and permanently moored houseboats.
Come on now, we all know this, I don't think anyone on here is that daft to believe CRT are doing a grand job...

It's not so much the regular posters on here that are the problem, its the number of lurkers and visitors and those who suddenly appear and start arguing for CRT

preventative maintenance means fixing it before it collapses totally

Absolutely I do find it wrong, and was cursing CRT when I was attempting to shut the gates last week. But I just said it was no worse in my eyes as it was last year. Also cursed CRT last week halfway up heartbreak hill when I noticed the same yellow tape on the lock that was there last year also.

Well - having had a couple of days waiting to hear about lock 1, a really helpful, polite and genuinely friendly young man called Luke just called me to say they would try and help me through at a time of my convenience...
HOWEVER, after a couple of nights disturbed sleep worrying about getting stuck in the crappy bit or not being able to get back through, I changed my plans and decided only to go down to Slawit before returning through the tunnel 5 days later.
I've also optimistically cancelled my next amended trip through which was early may(thus releasing a tunnel passage either way) and will head to Runcorn instead or Wigan... can't face the uncertainty - and then at least IF something it said on the 20th, I'll be in the right area to make a run/dash for it through the landslide bit to get back on route.

Hope you have booked the Bridgewater Canal...
Bookings now being taken.

I hear that the problem with the landslip is that the ownership of the land is in question or unknown. So nothing will be done until the lawyers have deliberated.
