If anyone is able to help with this query it is likely to be JohnV or Tony Dunkley, who may be aware of historical information.
My father has been tracing his family tree. His great great grandfather lived in Castleford, and was known as a waterman. Sometime around 1870 he moved with his family to Driffield. Apparently he had a string of 16 or so barges operating on the Humber. When he died in 1893 he was described on his gravestone as a Master Mariner. He probably moved from Castleford to Driffield when he became a Master Mariner.
It has not been possible to find out any more information about the Harrison barges, anyone got any suggestions where to research?

Hello duncan, Apart from what JohnV has already suggested, the only other things I can think of where you might get a useful lead or contact details for another source of old records from is Hull Maritime Museum : -- < www.hcandl.co.uk/museums-and-galleries/hull-maritime-museum/... > or the Yorkshire Film Archive for the Port of Goole : -- < www.yfanefa.com/record/7232 >

The book you should read is 'The Sailing Ships and Mariners of Knottingley', Roy Gosney and Rosemary Bowyer, ISBN 0 9534696 0 3. To some extent, Knottingley was a more important boat owning centre than Castleford, with many vessels and families working in the coastal trade based there, even after Goole opened. I have had a quick look in my copy, but cannot see the name Harrison, though there are many family names in the text, and no name index. The book will give you some background to how the keel trade operated in the 19th century.
