Hey Jim, how's the bike running after a few months? Used it much? (couldn't find the original thread, apologies). Just done 12.5 miles this morning, pushing 800 since mid August. I use it for shopping, going in to Rochdale, there was a Silver Circus class this morning. Certainly don't regret getting it, more than happy with the Bafang kit, as far as I can see, apart from Bosch motors being more streamlined, the frame being built around them, there is no advantage at all. The Bafang motor can be repaired if needs be, lots of support on the net. I can now tweak the motor with an app on my phone, boosting power etc, but I've now got it on standard settings, apart from the thumb throttle set to current control and maximum power. The only thing I'd upgrade is my brakes, disc are better, I wish I'd known there are brackets to fit disc calipers to older bikes, I bought a new pair of wheels last year, I'd have got disc hubs. I go out in all weathers, treated myself to a Paramo hi Viz waterproof and a new helmet earlier this summer.

Jim, one thing - some people seem to have issues surrounding gear changes and accelerated chain wear - is any of that a problem as you see it?

That is what I have, bought from Woosh bikes in brighton, £800 with a 17.5ah shark battery and the ring spanner to tighten the lockring. No problem changing gear, though it does crunch a little on higher power. There is a gubbins you can fit in the gear cable, or just dab a brake to kill the motor briefly. You might need a new gear lever if current one is integral with lever. Also worth getting a Bafang programming lead, can send you a link for one that works with the phone app if you need. Mine came with a 46t chainring, a tad high for the tracks round here, fitted a 44t, it's great. Depends what terrain you go on. If you need other advice, pedelecs forum is the place to go, some knowledgeable helpful guys in there. Just ordered some swept back handlebars, a bit more sit up and beg, will be easier on my wrists, the one I damaged gives me a bit of gyp. Will take some pressure off. Get the biggest battery you can afford is advice I've seen elsewhere, though that supplier didn't have 17.5ah in stock.

Thanks Jim, yes a 20ah batt would be nice, they don't seem to be any larger in 36v. I'll check out the woosh place. All the cheapest deals on offer are from HK sellers, this may not turn out to be so cheap in the long run. Yep, the link for the cable would be nice, shall I PM you my email address?

I did have a cheaper lead that was ok with the windoze laptop, this lead works with the android phone too, using the Speeed app.

What's the torque like with these bikes? I fancy building a trailer for my surfboard, walking a mile and a half with it is a right pain, especially if it's windy. Would an electric bike likely cope with the added weight? There's a steep hill up to my house but I'd push it up there, the rest is more or less flat.

I carry a full load of shopping, no problem. An advantage of a mid drive motor is it uses your gears, so can cope with hills. I've pulled 2x 20kg bags of henfood in the dog trailer. How long is the surfboard? A longer drawbar on the trailer might work, the homcom trailers are about £80. It's also possible to up the power with a laptop/phone and the lead. So you end up with a 350w motor. I've had a play but it's fine on normal settings, 250w.

Not any actual experience of them as yet but the cognoscenti go on about torque more than speed, I expect it would work. For me the real question was whether or not to make it road legal and I've decided risking points and fines is dumb. The Bafang jobbies can be re-programmed to alter the power output any way you like.

It would be hard for pc plod to tell if you had upped the power. The speed setting 15mph, can be checked (and changed) on the display. I've read that a beat Bobby isn't competent, it would have to be a traffic cop cos it is vehicle related. Risk of getting caught is tiny.

Accepted but I've met a few very clued-up coppers when riding motorbikes. If I want two wheels fast I'll buy a proper bike. The ebike thing isn't about speed for me.

Gris est tres fashionable dans le moment.* I have 29" rims, hybrid frame. You'll get more torque with smaller wheels. *I await correction by young andrew.
