I suspect when you go back your wages will have gone up big style, I am half temped to get my license back and do a few days a week Work. Why if you have no need? To increase my old age pension, recent changes mean I dont have enough years for a full pension!! But you are right I have no need in reality as my military pensions are sufficient

Work. Why if you have no need? Prostitutes don't murder themselves. True, but in your case that isn’t work, it’s a vocation.

But you are right I have no need in reality as my military pensions are sufficient If you receive more pension, you’ll only add to your carbon footprint by buying yet another vehicle. Forget the work, you have no need for it, there are better ways to spend your time.

I have enough to enjoy my simple lifestyle until pensions kick in. And yet, I've started doing a few jobs locally. A morning here a morning there, tidying gardens, painting, simple carpentry jobs etc. etc. It's nice to have a little more money, you never know what's round the corner. It's not really money that makes me do it though. I think work, as long as you control it, rather than it controlling you can add another dimension to an almost totally free life. The control, in my case, is not doing more than 3 mornings a week, and turning down anything I just don't fancy.

Having said that, in the job I'll be going back to on the 16th I'll be spending well over half the time just sitting about and going on the internet, or reading. Plus, a spell at work seems to make me enjoy the boating time more, if I was doing that all year round I think it might lose its shine a bit. My state pension kicks in in 2025 but I'll probably still work a few months a year even then.

In helicopter world it is 60 for single pilot and 65 for 2 pilot. Oh and the type of helicopter I flew was articulated too.

I have a need to work for mental ballance.
I live on my own and boat on my own and I enjoy the solitude much of the time.
However I don't think doing that all the time would do me much good.
The work I do is often low to almost zero financial gain but I do get a lot of pay in "invisibles" special/free deals on materials, often zero cost for jobs that others do for me etc
but the main reason is, as the Irish would say, the craic.
I also get a bonus of trips on working boats, sometimes as crew and sometimes just for the ride.

No- at 65 I'd need to have a medical annually rather than every five years but as long as I could pass that I could keep my licence should I so wish, I've known a few drivers still working in their late 70s.

Oh and the type of helicopter I flew was articulated too. Is age not a 'protected characteristic', making this upper age limit illegal? No. The age limits are enshrined in aviation law. The equalities act can’t just be used on its own. For example a pilot who had become a blind paraplegic couldn’t demand to continue flying because to ground him would be discriminating on a protected characteristic (disability). Years ago my company made everyone retire at 58 which was the pensionable age. That stopped perhaps 20 years or so ago because it was just company policy and fell foul of age discrimination. But the maximum age for a pilot engaged in public transport operations is set in law and overrides any equalities lark. Of course there is no upper age limit for leisure flying.

Which seems fair enough to some extent. On the other hand a medical is a bit like an MOT - only proves you are fit whilst in the consulting room. Next day, anything can happen and something bad is more likely to happen as you get older. Also, it is really difficult to evaluate the mental capacity of someone during a medical. They may be suffering from some mental impairment, from dementia to just being a dozy slow-thinking old git, or even something serious like an obsession with landscaping and an unhealthy interest in yellow mopeds.
