If you could recharge the battery off the bike after use I wonder if you could build a small NMC tube battery from 18650 or the next cell size up from that. Or LTO but they are quite large . Perhaps carry two of the batteries and charge one every time the bike is not in use.
In theory you could eliminate the need for engine based charging.
Could be an interesting approach for a "naked" lightweight motorbike not used for long distances.

and it''s definitely worth a second picture This example has binned the battery and all the gubbins that goes with it in favour of cleaner aesthetics by way of something poetically called a battery eliminator. It's not recommended for road use since the lights go dim at low revs. Perhaps a very small lithium battery could be used instead to achieve the same appearance. in the olden days we used to call it ........... a flywheel mag

I bought this effort a while ago when I had battery issues. A big kick in small box. I imagine it would be a piece of cake to integrate it. The rectifier situation I don't know about, the stock item will be set up to service a lead/acid battery. But it's nice and slim - should easily fit under the seat. ETA A thermal runaway would be interesting since it would be under your arse

I know nothing about motorcycles as have never owned one of any description but it seems the high energy density lithium batteries could do interesting things for the lighting and starting systems.
I actually think you could get away with removing the charging circuit completely on a small bike and surely this would be an advantage in terms of weight.

Yeah that's why you don't often see a race bike with a battery which is the heavy bit. The rest is of little consequence for dry weight.

Presumably road motorbikes need lighting. Maybe they also need a charging circuit?
Not sure if you are allowed to use bicycle lights on a motorcycle or if they blah blah blah I am getting too boring ?

Not sure if you are allowed to use bicycle lights on a motorcycle or if they blah blah blah I am getting too boring ? Presumably. Battery lights would be legal but probably shit. Also the rear light has to function as a brake light as well so there would be no particular advantage in messing with standard items (except on aesthetic grounds - square headlights - yuk).

Also the rear light has to function as a brake light as well so there would be no particular advantage in messing with standard items (except on aesthetic grounds - square headlights - yuk). when I got my first MK8 Competition Itom (which has a flywheel mag) I noticed that the tail light bulb was a standard twin filament lamp but the brake light part was not wired up. I thought someone must have alterred it so I simply added one of those clamp on the frame type switches and wired it up. ....... The lights were pathetic anyway even by the standards of the 50's/60's (18W head lamp !!! 5 watt tail lamp) but when I first rode the bike in the dark after adding the brake light, I discovered that when I got to the first bend and braked, the bloody headlamp virtually went out.
needless to say it was put back to standard smartish (brake light not a legal requirement) It wasn't the only quirk either the back brake was heel operated and the speedo only went up to 40 (and it had a top speed in standard trim of 65 )

On the Clockwork Banana the primary purpose of the (6v) battery is to act as a voltage regulator. The bike will start and run without a battery fitted but all the lamps will blow as the stator puts out about 10v.

My Yam RS125 had a 6v system, very poor headlight. I fitted a battery bike light to the handlebars which was immeasurably better and, apparently, legal.
