But that doesnt make you right Kris and John and I wrong. It means we are compliant and maybe you and others in the past have had a run in with CRT and come second I don't think anyone said that, its a debating forum with the occasional jibe thrown in for good measure, its only from hearing all points that you try and form a balanced opinion.Established positions can sometimes be difficult to move away from. If I am standing with a Doctor in London who requires a boat to live on as housing in order to contribute to society why should we as fellow men deny him that roof over his head.We are a broad church and successive mismanagement by successive governments have brought us to this juncture not the doctor.

If I am standing with a doctor in London who says he is going to CC in London I would tell him he is an idiot. If I am standing with a doctor in London who says he is going to live on a boat with a home mooring in London and believes as an essential worker he should have his mooring subsidised .....I would agree with him

The doctor could be a doctor in Rotherham where there are lots of moorings or houses at a reasonable price. The only way to change London is by the workers moving their labour somewhere else. Eventually the Government will click when London is at a standstill. It is not up to the waterways to provide cheap accommodation is it? My next door neighbor is not a rich man but he is a sensible man and he is my friend, like lots of other boaters around here. I have never advocated that boating is for rich people I have always said it is for all

The solution to social housing does not lie on the canals
If you packed London's canals with nose to tail narrowboats, the numbers involved would not solve London's housing crisis. It needs to be tackled elsewhere.
Solve it and at a stroke you would solve a lot of the problems on the canal system in the metropolis

Fair point John, but it may be part of the solution. I see John McDonnell announcing a massive public housebuilding program so fingers crossed because its an absolute disgrace that 13 years of Labour failed to address this.

You have no real idea or knowledge on what your spouting about, and it gets quite tiresome trying to explain things to you, when your constantly ignoring, or refusing to answer a question. Rotherham is a crap hole, I've been there,. If I had to get a mooring in that area, I'd give up boating.

The usage of canals in the UK is changing, like it or not, its a fact. If you don't like it, your gonna have to get off.

"you have to accept the canals becoming social housing for a number of people" Why? I also don't understand it. Being new to the canals I'm certainly no expert and have always assumed that some people live on the canals. It does seem daft when there are very long lines of boats and we have to go at 'tickover please'. Living on a boat on a canal is a choice, surely? Are local governments obliged to house everyone by law? How would people feel if a few thousand extra people get steel coffins and plonk them on the water "as it's cheap"? Both sides of the Grand Union choc-a-bloc all the way from London to Braunston, one lane in the middle? Tickover all the way to Braunston? Remember - people didn't live on canals 300 years ago, 'cos there weren't any! It's not a 'natural life style' at all. I don't mind (some) people living on their boats on the waterways, it makes overnight parking places feel safer if there's a 'live one' nearby, and brings life and colour to the canals. But to fill the canals in with boats purely as accommodation does not seem right. All that shower water and sludge going down the kitchen sink 'ole straight into the water, not to mention the piss down the kitchen sink

Isn't living on canal boats and not going anywhere a bit like wanting to live in old aeroplanes lined up round the edge of Heathrow airport?

My next door neighbor had the misfortune for his boat to sink, he is a pensioner and only had 3rd party insurance. At that point he could have got a council flat and lived a life on land, however he has been a boater for years and realises whilst it is not a cheap or easy way of life it is his life and so bought another boat. Boating is a lifestyle choice it takes work and a love of the waterways to do it, people that decide it is a cheap and easy way of life should be dissuaded from doing it because they like John says are just going to make a problem worse not better. Now I am well off but it was no accident it took a lot of hard work to get where I am no silver spoons or stuff like that!! These are all our waterways, and I dont want them ruined for the future which will happen if people just consider it a cheap place to live, without any empathy for the beauty that are our canal and river system are.

"an absolute disgrace that 13 years of Labour failed to address this."
Can you name me a Labour politician who is homeless? I think they have all arranged nice pads for themselves.
Lack of accommodation and jobs provides fear and desperation - and this is what Governments run on. For the rest - keep their tummies full, provide plenty of alcohol, sit them in front of the telly - and they'll be quiet.

I know London pretty well and I don't think I should care to live there one jot. I used to drive GreenLine 735 Hertford - Enfield - Oxford Street/Victoria, and as a postman used to drive a van to Liverpool Street station from Hertford. One of the nicest things for me in London is the BHS cafe on Oxford Street where you can get a 'full English breakfast' and cup of tea, or lunch, at 'normal prices' and get a nice view out of the window - a good place to take visitors to London.
London really is overrated. I haven't been to Rotherham so cannot judge.

To be honest Jenlyn I think you do not understand the problem at all, your opinion is that if you fill a place up with boats that cant and wont move eventually people will except this. The reality is people are complaining and something is being done already to address the issue and you do not like that! You will discover that stamping your feet and having a hissy fit will achieve the some total of nothing like yesterday did. Also remember the local councils can introduce bylaws to resolve the issue as well
