I picked up a 150mm orbital sander to start taking the paint back to apply a new coat, but its shit, its only 450w and i only have a 1000w invertor so reluctant to go bigger and burn the invertor out, its only a bimble solar one. Thinking about dropping into Charity dock early October and asking if we can use his airline, if he has one, would these be much better than the 450w one being on air? www.toolstation.com/draper-air-sander/p17232Would like to take the gunwales back as much as possible for painting black, then everything else enough to get rid of flaky bits and prime if needed for a total re paint in Spring, will give it another rub down in sprint before painting, but just want to get the hard work done before the winter.

Or is a belt sander a better option for mass removal as quick as possible?

I guess you know ... but I bought a Makita orbital which I plugged direct into my 2kw Honda genny. If you're in Charity Dock you'll have mains power anyway. I didn't wish to strip any sound paint so used 400 grade discs and sanded until all was smooth to the feel (eyes shut). I know nowt about compressor tools. Mr Stabby can tell you about the dock Rog

Pete Gilbert has got an industrial compressor. You'd probably be best doing the whole job in one go I would have thought, it will save one dry docking fee, and if it's due for hull blacking get that done at the same time. If you get him to do that then the cost of the dry docking is included in the price so it won't cost you anything. I've got his phone number if you want me to PM it.

Just to add that I personally would do no more than key the existing paint, it is pointless removing paint which is adhering well, the more coats of paint there are the better the protection.
