Saw a bag of rubbish as I pulled onto the water point at Fosse on the GU , but once moored I saw there was about eight bags and boxes ... too much to load up and take to the skip I'm afraid ... old furniture, used oil and assorted refuse bags and clothing. I have e mailed C&RT in the hope they can arrange removal before more stuff is added. I know many of us find it easy to have a pop at C&RT, but it was almost certainly boaters who've dumped this ... and there's skips at Bascote and Radford, so they've had to pass one or the other. Rog

Floaters not boaters.
It's a shame some take the pikey attitude and it seems to be getting worse. Not new as has always happened but once it gets popular and with the closing of some sanity stations by the CRT it could get quite messy.*
And all the while the public are seeking to have their nerves settled and feel enormous wellness by canals.
Hmm. This could be a problem.
Or maybe people need to do more of it to keep the blighters away !
* Did you notice any cardboard boxes of partially decomposed shit?

Rog So unnecessary but, as you say, is probably boaters. However, one of the best bin compounds I've seen lately is at Market Drayton - a proper enclosed gate (about 3 ft wide by 6ft tall) locked (but I understand BW keys are now available to anyone on Amazon for about £3!) so no sofas, bathroom suites, rubbish all over the ground, etc - just 6 clean, tidy skips. Maybe CRT could consider issuing such keys only to licence holders and locking all facilities?

I've always taken the view that CRT bins should be on top of barges designed for the purpose and only accessible to people on boats.
Yes this would mean you can't walk to the bins but presumably one has a functioning boat.
I suppose people could get caught out if it all froze over but perhaps if not geared up to living on a boat on the towpath one could consider other lifestyle solutions.
This would also give some work to contractors for dealing with the disposal.
I think there might be a trial of this happening somewhere. To me it is a no brainer but then I have no brain so that makes sense.
A land based locked compound is just wrong. Use boats.

The problem here is that unless CRT replaced all of the existing locks with new locks with unique keyways and using uniquely profiled key blanks, any key cutting place can replicate the keys, the locks are bog standard Yale rim locks.

They look quite easy to pick. I doubt there are any security pins.
Not that anyone would bother but might be an interesting one to have a go at.

Rather like anti vandal keys, I think the BW yale key is hardly considered security, just a guard against casual opportunist misuse.
Particularly at Hawkesbury (before they put the skips inside) I've seen builders vans off loading into the old compound.

Rog ............ and of course, being a thoroughly responsible member of the public, you took photos or at least noted their vehicle reg. and description and reported the matter to the local authority who can impose a fine of up to £50k. Put these bar stewards out of business, is what I say.

He may be the only one who uses cardboard boxes.
I have seen large transparent yogurt pots of partly decomposed shit on boat decks now and then.
I would have thought, unless you were a coprophile, you would use a non transparent type.
It made me wonder what it might be like inside the craft.
Needless to say I did not venture to ask as I suspect the internal fitout was pretty crap.

Would have reported now ... but back then I didn't know if it was a C&RT vehicle or contractor.
I learned after the event that Hawkesbury (in particular with its road access) was regularly 'abused' by local vehicles dumping large scale rubbish.

Years ago we were out on a cruise just after Christmas, we were walking the dog at about 7ish down at Kilnhurst, it was dark when a corsa reversed up to the navigation and started to throw black bags full of rubbish into the cut! I took a picture informed police immediately and council, CRT the next day, guess who took court action? CRT and i had my day in the magistrates court, Crt even fished out the bags so they had the evidence. The barsteward said in court it doesnt matter and how else was he expected to get rid of all the rubbish when the binmen wouldnt take it? In truth we have no chance of ever stopping this stuff as people just dont care anymore

Out for a stroll one day, Jane and I spotted a van reverse into a field just off a quiet country lane.
Ah ha I thought ... fly tipping ... I'll confront the bounder.
Stepped into the field and around the van, to find the very nice chap releasing his racing pigeons 😳
