Any so-called canal boat "engineer/fitter" who thinks that it's not possible to get a rudder assembly -- fabricated to the conventional commercial/working boat pattern -- off and then refitted to a modern day noddy-narrowboat without slipping, docking, or craning the boat out of the water, is an incompetent prat who isn't on top of his job, . . by definition. To be fair, the bit I've put in bold is the important bit. There are a few designs out there which need the boat out of water, or the engineer in water, to deal with a rudder problem with the symptoms reported by Jo. (I can think of 4 off hand; there's probably others out there) True, up to a point, . . although any removal difficulties arising from design deviations from the conventional (ie. one piece rudder and stock passing up through a sufficiently large I.D. rudder tube, with separate ramshead on a taper) are easily overcome in the presence of a suitably short pound to dry out the boat in, a hacksaw, and someone with the nouse to make use of them. Once the damaged rudder, stock and ramshead components have been removed and taken away for repair, they can be modified as part of the repair process to allow them to be subsequently refitted afloat -- provided that the rudder tube (in the boat's counter) is of sufficiently large I.D. -- or as a bolt together assembly to be refitted in the same short pound (where it was taken off the boat) if the rudder tube I.D. is too small to allow a conventional rudder and stock assembly to be re-installed, . . either afloat or out of the water. I've lost count of the number of times I've actually done as described above to repair damaged -- usually bent -- rudders on poorly designed modern day canal pleasure craft. This particular instance of rudder damage couldn't have happened at a more convenient spot, . . a few hundred yards from one of the shortest pounds in the whole length of the Leeds & Liverpool, . . and canalside road access. Both myself, and some of the owners whose damaged rudders I've fixed in the past, would have counted ourselves fortunate if every instance of rudder or sterngear damage had occurred at such a convenient and ideal spot.

You just enabled another 10 pages at least.. It must be rather irritating to be faced with the probability of yet more posts that you're too thick to understand !

As this forum lacks a 'virtual' rubbish skip into which both Mr Shit-for-Brains and this latest contribution from him should be consigned, the next best thing to do with them would be to transfer this rubbish -- that's the post AND it's author -- into the "Obvious Problem" thread, . . where, in addition to those who already have, they should be joined by anyone else who sees fit to add a vote of approval to such mindless garbage.

As a matter of fact, . . repairing broken down or damaged boats IS very much "my business". It's what marine engineers who aren't called 'Wayne' do ! Unless the boat is around the Middleditch area. Wayne Dunkley Commercial Vessel Operators & Marine Engineers Four weeks today since forum scum kris promised LadyBSE that -- "Wayne will sort you out." I'd say it's well past time for an update on how the barmy old trout's rudder was "sorted out", . . she did, after all, say on here after the highly recommended Wayne had been and given the damaged rudder his 'monkey studying a watch' treatment, . .that it would all be fixed within a week : - < thunderboat.boards.net/post/319071/thread >

Indeed. He also harassed @nemesis of the forum and almost managed to get rid of kris. Both of the above were posting quite a lot and they both are actually into boats. Tony on the other hand seems to just be into annoying people and often uses his rather outdated knowledge as some sort of bizarre weapon against people who don't share his experience. Very odd and slightly sad that people who were good contributors just can't be arsed any more because of one particularly vindictive oxygen stealer.

There is an orderly queue for updates, to be answered according to age. Top priority, top two in the line, The lightship and Halcyon Daze. We can move on to others next.
