Just looking at some '80s equipment I have gathered for Dulcinea I came across a noticeable dilemma which must have been a real headache for the designers of the products. The LORAN units, which are now obsolete but still look incredibly cool, have a competition going on with "screen real estate" v "control pad real estate". It's fascinating to see how the evolution of consumer products works. The new version would no doubt just be a full touch screen. I really like the old control panels with the membrane thing on top. HTH. And I was like

Hmmmppfff .... do you honestly think Loran C is going to be much use ? half mile accuracy and you don't intend to go beyond Sea Reach ..... If you're thinking post Carrington event then possibly, land transmitters might be back up quicker .... but if you are really thinking post apocalypse then maybe just buy a sextant, a good chronometer and a book of tables
incidentally I think they look cool as well
edit ..... I hadn't realised that Loran C had been closed down ...... 11 years ago !!! Just shows how you can lose track of technological changesmif you are not dealing with them all the time

How do you see where you are actually going though, i mean not much window space with all that junk stuff in the way?
Its like the people who have phones, sat nav and cams stuck in the window of their cars!

They are not permanently fixed. Obsolete devices anyway so I just have them there as nice things to look at and extra privacy when moored for a long time and put them away when out boating.

The good ship Dulcy has been semi-retired as a floating maritime museum. What's the next project then?

I won't be getting any more boats. Dulcinea is the last one I will own. It's perfect.
Might have a cruise this weekend as it happens but don't usually get much time.
As for projects most of them happen in my head but more sorting of the floating electric beer drinking platform is in order in the form of a 415w solar panel over the front half of it and 160ah of Lithium Titanate 14v batteries. That should make it 100% self propelling with endless range.
Settled on a Minn Kota "turbo 36" like yours in fact just got a spare one as new for £50 which was a good deal.
They are good units those early Minn Kota's and very very quiet.
Back in the summer I bought a broken Traxxis 45 for £25 which fortunately had the MK electronic speed controller which is now built into the platform. Much nicer than the Chinese ones which always blow FETs.

Just noticed you can now get 655w solar panels! 8x4 basically. That's pretty big.

What about the stability of the EBDP? With the weight of a big panel on it?

What about the stability of the EBDP? With the weight of a big panel on it? It's actually very stable. The weight will be fine. I've had two full size adults in it and it's no problem. Panel weight 23kg batteries will be another 30kg if I have 160ah. What could be a slight issue is the wind. That will be interesting. The panel (I have several so it might be 355w,365w,or 415w) will only stick out about 6-8 inches each side so not terrible and one side effect is deflection of wash from passing speed freaks. It could work out okay. Also enough power there and storage space beneath the panel for a cool box so it could end up being completely cold beer self sufficient as well. A little plan to have a run from Lechlade to Teddington on it next summer. Continuously cruising. That might be quite pleasant would probably have to sleep on a tent though which is less good.

If your quick, there is talk of a pram cover going cheap oop north, beat the clown to it. Just sleep in the boat then.

Indeed. Happy to be on top of the stuff but the less contact the better.
Beer and a dry suit. That'll sort it.
I wonder if it's possible to sleep in a dry suit or is that too silly.
Those military sleeping bags look quite interesting as well.
And speaking of pram hoods an actual hood from a pram is an interesting option for the part not covered by the solar panel!
Like those mobility scooters have.
Ah. Mobility scooter parts. Hmm must investigate.
