Sarries were punished for last seasons salary cap offence. This 35 point punishment is for this season so couldn't have been in place at the start of the season as they hadn't transgressed. On a positive note there is no cap in the lower divisions so they may well be able to keep their players and the players will still be available for England selection. They just have to sort the money out before the end of next season. A small addendum, I believe Championship teams have to show they are below the salary cap (even though it doesn't apply to them) for two seasons prior to promotion so its just possible that Sarries will be down for two seasons. I think they could well shed any out of contract players at the end of the season but we shall see. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/51169248They still have the European cup to fight for but if they win they wont be able to defend it .

I have donned my hard hat. It would be a great shame to see rugby going the same way as soccer where the amounts of money changing hands is obscene. If these draconian measures fire a shot across the bows of all the other clubs contemplating breaking this particular rule then it is a good thing.

I take no issue with the pursuit of Saracens being punished if they have broken rules they signed up to.
But the players have committed no offence and would not be aware of financial details of the club.
And why wait until well into the season to relegate them ... better done in the closed season.
It is the implementation of the punishments and the drip feed of information I take objection to.
If the matter could have been handled in a worse way, I cannot imagine it.

Rog Ok, hard on the players but i imagine they will do some research before they sign up next time as to the possibility of this scenario happening again. Relegating them in the closed season would have less of an impact and this is partly the point of the exercise ...... to deter others from following suit. Maximum impact, job done.

But the season carries on ... Fatialofa a Worcester player, is still in intensive care with a serious neck injury playing a game around christmas.
Bad enough, but imagine it was to happen again in a game that was now meaningless because of this punishment.
The risks to players are not diminished at all.
You can tell decisions have been made by people who don't pull the boots on.
In the closed season players, coaches etc would have been able to seek contracts at new clubs ... mid season contracts are in place.
And I understand the imposing of punishments may not yet be over.
The way this has been dealt with (for over three years) does no one any credit.

Anyway, the 6N squad looks interesting ... 6 Saints players and an apprentice @gazza ... the glory days are coming home. Good to see uncapped players involved, although injuries to Billy, Nowell, Wilson, Slade etc dictate some fresh blood. No out and out 8 selected is a curiousity ... and I thought new scrum half blood may have been chosen. But perhaps Alexander Mitchell is a nod to the future, and for the moment Youngs is only 30. With the two home games being Ireland and Wales (arguably the toughest opposition) and our final game against Italy, I am hoping for great things. Got to love the 6N ... finest rugby union competition by far Rog

The players are guilty of nothing and risk serious injury whenever they take the field. The league managers have managed to create a nonsense where players are supposed to take such risks all season, when results are a foregone conclusion (Sarries players and their opponents). If this could have been handled in a worse way, I cannot imagine it. Rog I'm not too sure about the players being absolved of any guilt, wage inflation driven by the green eyed monster hasn't helped any of the other 11 clubs. Any player involved with Saracens that had investment deals and thought they were complying with the rules of the cap are either thick as pig shit or arrogant in the extreme. Still, Saints managed to get by the cheating swines in 2014 😁👍

The Rugby Paper was running articles over the last few years, about Saracens, and particularly Wray's, forward looking commercial investment as a sleeping partner with senior players fledgling businesses.
If it broke the cap, as now appears, it was certainly done openly and publicly, so why would players be aware it was breaking the rules when it's taken three years for the league to decide.
I feel sorry for players, coaches and club staff caught up in this ... but punishment is required and deserved.
I would have hoped for greater clarity, and better implementation of punishments by league management ... it was not to be.
I hope the season can be concluded without any further serious injuries ... particularly injuries sustained in a 'meaningless' game.

Rog Have a look here Rog, the lid was lifted by others - I wouldn't exactly call the players behaviour open and honest. news.sky.com/story/revealed-how-saracens-broke-rugbys-salary-cap-rules-11915269There is plenty more to run on this story.

Sorry @gazza I don't see that article massively contradicts what I've said.
The club are guilty and no one's arguing.
I maintain the players will only be privy to their own contract dealings, not the whole clubs, and much of the 'silent partner' investment in businesses away from rugby has never been hidden but rather has been 'trumpeted' as where the Saracens 'Wolf Pack' mentality has been encouraged.
Notwithstanding that, the matter should have been finalised before the beginning of this season in my view.
But we are where we are.
I hope no player sustains a substantial injury in a meaningless game.

Brushing swiftly past Saints loss to the Exiles ... the 6N opening weekend rapidly approaches. It will be fascinating to observe the effects of new coaching staff within the England camp but also at Wales, France, Ireland and Italy. I am hoping for further progression from England following on from a strong RWC, but away to France is a tough opener. Sean Edwards could have a huge impact at France, who always have individual talent and flair, but don't always mold into a strong team ... under Edwards I can see this changing. Two games Saturday and one on Sunday ... a great weekend. I fancy Ireland to romp past an unsettled Scotland team ... Wales to hammer Italy ... and on Sunday a tough but narrow win for England in Paris. Let the fun begin Rog

Injuries aside fast Eddie has picked an exciting 23 for the France game on Sunday ... I'm sure @gazza will be pleased.
Good to see Furbank getting his chance, and with Daly and May in the back three, this could be the start of something big.

Too easy so uncompetitive dull game, in which Wales romped to a bp win ... sort of expected. Ireland v Scotland was a much more thrilling affair, and but for Scotland's unsurpassed ability to self destruct, they could have won. The guiness was delightful too Rog

Italy worse than usual if that's possible.
and Scotland, hmm, some players were up to playing a faster game which looked promising but their support looked like they'd been told too stand still for 2 seconds before reacting.
Tomorrow's game should be better.
