I'm not a tennis fan but it seems that the player was invited and approved to participate in the competition by the local organisers and state ... to allow him to arrive in the country before raising objections nationally seems very amateurish and unfair on the player. Rog I think there certainly has been some disconnect between the competition organisers and the country’s government. But still, it is ultimately the responsibility of the visitor to ensure they meet the legal requirements of the country they propose to visit. it would be like us announcing the Thunderboat International Changing Oil (ThICO) competition, inviting the current world champion (Foxy) over from Finland and us saying “never mind the travel rules, just come over anyway because you are the bestest WORLD CHAMPION and so don’t need to bother with any of the bureaucratic crap” and then getting all sulky when he is denied entry due to not having the necessary travel documents, and then blaming the government for being SO UNFAIR!

Not quite ... he was invited to take part, and the host state accepted his status to attend and do so. On arrival in the country the state approval was dismissed by national government. As I understand it the organisers pay appearance fees to the top competitors as their presence upgrades the quality and consequently the profitability of the tournament. A more appropriate analogy (though why facts can't simply stand alone, but I know you like analogies) is you to invite me for Christmas with you and Jeff, but then when your Mum becomes aware of the invite, her putting her foot down to throw me out (I having arrived with a bottle) as being unworthy to cross her threshold. But of course in your Mum's case I'd understand her not wanting someone like me in her home Rog

To have attempted to do so was stupid. The whole shit storm is on their heads for trying to avoid Nationally applying regulations.

In the case you cite, it would have been inappropriate and foolish for us to invite you to someone else’s house without first checking with the home owner that the arrangements were satisfactory.

Agreed.
Hopefully the checking SHOULD have been done BEFORE the invite.

Yet very oddly, you and Nick were quite happily slagging the player off initially. What a pair of plonkers.

He contributed by avoiding answering the imigration correctly .... and he had to have been the one that said to the officials " I'm not coming if I have to be vaccinated/go into quarantine"
If you can't work that out .... you are the plonker

I’m not sure if you are playing silly buggers, or have age related brain damage, but you’re coming out with some right crap lately.

We're all just expressing personal opinions formed from limited available information ... I don't see the necessity for being rude to someone who merely expresses a different opinion.
Who knows what's right or wrong.

Who knows what's right or wrong. Rog The information load on this was massive. The fact that John and Nick avoided that is hysterical, given their usual stance on facts. In this case they were both being particularly stupid, and are deserved of any incoming flack for being thus.

He has missed tournaments before, I'm sure the winners of those did not feel they were hollow Victories.
Some media are reporting he had the wrong Visa, the teams in F1 couldn't meet the entry requirements either which is why they cancelled both races.
