s the best type of soundproofing to line the inside of an engine bay (something which will stick to steel or wood).
Ideally I'd like to be able to find something reclaimed as not keen on spending a lot of money on it as it may not be very effective. A box over the engine might be better option but I would like to experiment.
Any ideas?

The thin foam / "lead" / thick foam is the standard for sound insulation for engines. They usually have another layer so they dont soak up oil, etc. If you have a lot of engine space then boxing the engine and using the sound insulation will be the best route. Just remember your alternator needs air for cooling.

and the BSS is strict about it's non burning properties, so you do need the proper stuff, which unfortunately is expensive, though I have seen people selling decent sized off cuts on ebay.

Thanks for that. There is a lot of room there and I can keep the alternator out of any box.
The engine is rigidly mounted so not sure how much noise I can get rid of hence the unwillingness to spend £££ if it doesn't have much effect anyway
I did wonder about making a box round the engine and cladding it with Dibond panels (aluminium-plastic board product.

18mm shuttering ply with soundproofing inside? I could make it demountable for servicing. Its a water cooled engine so should be OK and the alternator is stuck out a bit at the front as it is retrofitted so not part of the engine "package" as such.

I recall seeing a cocooned Beta Tug at a show once which was in essence a similar concept. The noise reduction was amazing.

Yes sound insulation on the inside with the thinner foam on the box side and the thicker foam facing the engine. After that getting the engine unfixed and on decent blocks (as well as the running gear) and exhaust would be next.
