Unfortunately not out to sea but in a rather choppy harbour at Charlsetown, Cornwall. Getting on and off was 'interesting' but I suppose if you are going to fall off a boat and into the sea then a RNLI boat is the one to pick. We didnt know it was going to be there but by co incidence it was there doing its bit for fundraising. Got to speak to the cox, see the 'survivor cabin' and climb up to the upper steering position and the helm position. It was Fowey's boat shortly to be replaced by one of the new water jet propelled jobbies. The crew were a bit scepital as they are familiar with the existing boat. Very interesting to see.

I was speaking to the coxswain of the Wells lifeboat last year. He was also equally apprehensive about the new boat "The Duke of Edinburgh" that they hopefully will be taking delivery of sometime this month. The crew were all sent down to Poole for various training days, but he said it was very different from a traditional boat and has joystick controls. They not only have a new boat, but a new boat house and Shannon Launch & Recovery Systems (SLRS), which looks like a seriously capable and expensive bit of kit. Dads name is in memorandum on the Wells Boat thanks to a family member , along with a decent chunk of money that went to his adopted home station of Lowestoft thanks to the generosity of family and friends like JohnV who gave him such a good send off last October 👍

I once went on a lifeboat. I was camping down Southampton water and was too close to the refinery jetty. The local lifeboat told me to cross the channel and go the other side, which I did. They came back quickly after being told of by VTS for sending me across the shipping Chanel with some large ships coming so they dragged us on board and gave us a lift.

It's all changed now with the advent of mobile phones but when I lived in Ramsgate, for years the lifeboat station used to send up a very loud explosive flare which you could hear over the whole town to summons the lifeboat crew when there was a "shout". It was quite emotional really, the whole town knowing that the crew were out especially during a very bad storm, of which we had many there.

Some stations have replaced the flares with 'wide area sirens' that can be widely heard and of course the crews carry pagers. You can often hear them in the background during a launch on 'Saving Lives.......' Sorry the link is the book of face.... fb.watch/fkCBJRFZ4k/And their very distinctive sounding pagers.
