Never been in through Catherine de Barnes as Lapworth is so pleasant and is narrow, easy locks.
It may be that these boats can get up Stockton (but I doubt it) or are to be craned out at some point, who knows.
But I wouldn't wish to be trapped within 25 or 30 miles of canal.

Rog Neither would I, and over the years I've tried to convince widebeam buyers that anything over 10ft wide on the canals is sheer stupidity. They don't listen or hear you until they've made the mistake, and realised having a big dick ain't all and everything.

Seems to be quite a lot in the seven or so marinas around Braunston/Napton but largely live aboard and don't cruise.
Lovely to have the space in those circumstances.

It's a beautiful new looking boat, if not my choice, as is the other one at Radford. It was quaysider breasted the other day that reminded me of the pinch points. Rog Yeah that was a bit of a school boy error and a good job Rog and Jane turned up to warn me or I'd have slammed little Elizabeth's nose into the side. NOT like she's not already used to that as Simon pretty much does it in every lock lol.

Have you been up into Birmingham in yours @jj ? I think yours is 9'6" beam though. Rog Yeh it is in fact 9' 6", and I've only gone as far as Warwick with it. I was told that the top of hatton to Catherine de barnes was a shithole for rubbish and depth etc. Top of hatton to C de B is very pleasant IMO. Knowle locks are lovely, if a bit fierce (bigger paddles and more rise than Hatton). Beyond CdeB to Camp Hill top lock is definitely a shallow shit hole!

The paddles are 2' 0'' square down Wigram's, and Itchington to the bottom of Radford, . . then 2' 6'' square up Hatton and 3' 0'' square at Knowle.

Acocks Green to Camp Hill used to be my playground as a nipper. We'd wait for a main line peg at Small Heath signal box and then you could duck past the signalman and into the 'Ackerdocks'. What more could a young 'un want? A railway line, a canal, a river or two, a disused test rifle range to dig for spent bullets, a disused victorian (and later) rubbish tip with a myriad of treasures. Last time I went through you had to watch out for the drug dealing scum.

A bit of an update.
Watched a mahoosive wide beam moor and taking a centre line we got to chatting to the lovely couple who live aboard.
It is 12ft beam, which they assure me is the maximum for the bridge at the Blue Lias pub.
The guy also told us that as the levels are currently an inch or two down, this helped ease his passage through that bridge hole (he did admit that occasionally it is difficult to avoid contact with that bridge being arched and clad).
So the boat in the photo and the other one I mentioned must be 11'6" beam.
Mystery solved π

Don't know if you can see how much wider the second boat is. Having seen these boats it has certainly focused my mind on the bridge holes ... must be a real stress steering through some of them on a 12ft beam boat. Being arched the sides are obviously lower ... such fun π Rog
