that is lovely, shame you didn't buy it. Lovely boat. Went over, 2 weeks ago, had a good look in the bilges, rooted through the rigging and I couldn't find fault. felt flipping lovely to be on. I was in absolute lust with her. Would have paid 40K or more if I had the money. Totally underpriced but the old guy owning her has to sell. she was on the market earlier at nearly 80K if i remember right. I'm gutted. I know this isn't as much of a bargain, but I reckon it will go for less than they are asking. It's got potential to be just as much a lovely boat as the one in Holland. rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F292563235148

At 52ft shes a lovely size and (well) completed versions sell in the low 200K range. Some of the woodwork has been done well, then some awful softwood bracing in areas needing hardwood. Unfortunately whoever decided to fit it out hadn't painted the hull interior with epoxy before commencing the fit out. Looks like normal shitty household paint splashed on with rust showing through, then they insulated it using a mixture of spray foam and insulation board. Most of it will have to come out or the hull will be scrap in a few years. Plus no facility for winches, mast supports or wiring to these has been made, very little stainless steel at obvious high wear areas including the railings. You can see bilge water amongst the ballast sacks. Any owner of this boat will spend more time scraping/painting and repairing than sailing. What a waste. PS, If you look at it on Boatshed there are plenty photos. Some showing the bodges especially around windows and heads.

Yes There is a 43' Morgan Giles mariner on there. Unusual because it is a fibreglass narrow boat. I'd quite like to have one of these so I would be able to get onto narrow canals again. I haven't been in any coffin locks for over 10 years. I sort of miss them a little bit as they are quite quaint but have enough boats already and the ones with accommodation are all wider than 7ft. This boat. I like it m.ebay.co.uk/itm/43-morgan-giles-narrowboat-/112991261566?nav=SEARCH

Looks cosy inside, and looks like a genuine sale. Yes, I quite like that higgledy-piggledy style. Even comes with bloke to make your tea.

I don't really like the way they have done the flue but it seems to be necessary in order to get the chimney inside the handrail. Looks very odd from inside. And the 4hp thorneycroft engine is probably 40hp. Early GRP boats have a reputation of being built like brick shithouses because apparently they didn't really know how the material would behave so they were laid up extra thick "just in case". 1969 is relatively early for GRP so there's a good chance its thick stuff. Its the best narrow GRP boat type I have come across. Johnv will disagree with me I assumed the person on the photo was for scale.

I would back the Ormetlites against anyone's for the 25 foot class and there standard of fit out against all comers in that era but Morgan Giles built some damn good Hulls (although I'm not sure about the hydraulic drive systems they used to use .... bit too complex for my taste) They used to build some tasty sea going boats as well I believe.

I have always been fascinated about Hydraulic drives but I didn't know enough about hydraulics to build one when I needed it ....I built diesel electric instead as that was my field. (although the final version of a long drawn out project used a continuously variable industrial gearbox designed for conveyor belts ....... it would go down to 1 or 2 rpm and still with a full power rating of the big three phase electric motors .... at that speed the propeller would cheerfully chop through 2x2's !!!)
