I think something like this would be perfect for London. Yes if you had a mooring for it. I understand your point about craning it in that is a trick I have wondered about for a long time but I suspect CRT would probably sort it. Another approach would be a boat too wide for the locks. Say a boat which is 15ft long and 30ft wide. Everybody on a boat in London just wants a floating apartment, don't they?

Not everyone Houseboats like that only work with moorings and moorings with fillies are very scarce.

Yes it had a small dutch barge (motorised talk I think) strapped to the back of it with ratchet straps acting as a pusher.
Interesting boat but full of concrete is not ideal. Awkward thing to deal with unless you have a mooring for it. I'm not sure how feasible it would be to motorise it. Might be do-able.

An old barge like that ballasted with concrete, that could very well have been done to avoid the cost of rebottoming and get some more life out off the barge, wouldn't be my choice to go through the effort and expenses of motorising.
I would rather spend more money and buy the sistership of "LAKE" instead, that is if there's no poured concrete ballast inside.

Yes I think BETELGEUSE is probably scrap.
I wonder if LAKE is still for sale. Went back on eBay asking £35k did not appear to sell.

The scrap places are normally not really interested in barges that have poured concrete ballast, I've even heard stories of people that had to pay to get them scrapped, instead of getting money from the scrappy.

To be fair it is claimed to have 10mm (3/8) plating. If the concrete is ballast and not a "repair" it could actually be quite a decent boat.
I think there is a fair chance that it is 3/8 iron plate. A bit confusing as it says its on the Medway but it was in east London very recently so it must have been towed.

Betelgeuse just passed me, slowly, bring pushed by the little dutch bargd. I had a good look at the hull plating and noticed an open hole where a skin fitting once was. That is definitely not 10mm plate. More like 1/4" which is 6.35mm original thickness.
