very true Kris ..... it would be a magnificent toy !!! I don't think anyone has built a boat that ticks every single box, boating is just to big a field. Deep ocean trips are not something I wish to do .... so that's one class of boat not needed. I have a large comfortable barge to live on, I have a very small narrow beam cruiser to explore the muddy ditches. The trip I wish to do is coastal with a tough, all weather, workmanlike cruiser. Small enough to single hand, large enough for coastal trips with guests. Fast enough to make a run for shelter if the weather turns unexpectedly but not such big engines as to need a tanker following you.
Seaworthy enough to take the weather if shelter is not close enough to run for
What am I describing ?
That's why I said I was green when I saw Andrews post describing the bunker from Fosdyke

Yes Andrews “toy trawler” does tick a lot of those boxes. To be honest it would have suited me if I had been looking. There’s something out there John, but then Andrews boat was the right price as well.

It's not fast though. Six knots top speed across water. Obviously a fast boat will drink a lot more but as previously discussed a Nelson would be ideal for JohnV.

I am happy with slow. JohnV said fast enough to escape problems so I assume he was referring to something other than a displacement plodder.

I did a lot of my exploring of the Essex and Suffolk coast at 3.5 kts (under power)
A passage speed of 6 or 7 kts and top end of maybe 9 or 10 would be ideal ..... I have my eye on a possibility that might be available in the autumn or early next year but it all hinges on the pennies.

I’d agree about having the little bit extra in reserve, especially if you intend to be going costal or estuaries. I’d need a little more power in mine to be able to go costal. Which is why I don’t mind it being a little over propped at the moment, as I think I’m going to put a 4lw in before too long.

I had one once with a 25 on it it was really fast and a good giggle. Really nice boat that is but too big to get in the stern deck of the toy trawler. 8ft would be ok but that's 9ft6. Obviously not going to be fast with the Suzuki 2 on it but that's a nice little dinghy motor to be fair.

Funny you mention this as one of my Thames friends (I have two) told me the same thing earlier today. And the other friend told me the same thing recently.
So it probably is true.
It definitely needs careful management as once it goes over ten it's going to get too annoying.
I did knock out that lovely little Colvic though when I bought the toy trawler so have been quite good.

Yes I can imagine it becomes a problem. You can always sell a few.

Here's a nice boat for JohnV if he wants enough power to escape bad weather. m.apolloduck.com/boat/commercial-vessels-crew-boat/453346 Can maintain 40kts in 2m waves and has a gyrostabiliser. Possible issues around the asking price however and the 380 litres per hour fuel consumption ! And I bet it's not half as much fun as an Opduwer.

very unusual ...... and yet doesn't appeal to me in the slightest It holds no attraction for me either, but the thread title is interesting or unusual boats. To me it looks like some ones expensive folly. Its been for sale for a long time clearly no one wants to part with a lot of money
