The (effluent) foam - a common feature of canals and rivers near locks and weirs in the 1950's, 60's and 70's - floating around the butty's stern end is a useful clue, . . but not anywhere near as useful as thinking about where, and why and how, all the foam that isn't floating on the cut has collected.
