There is some one who teaches paddle boarding on the canal here. She has just been getting them to jump in the water. Rather them than me, have they never heard of veils disease?

Wiel's disease (leptospirosis). Pronounced 'viles'.

Wiel's disease (leptospirosis). Pronounced 'viles'. Look I got most of the letters right, maybe not in the right order but you knew what I meant.

I had an altercation with a very abusive one in Newbold Tunnel earlier this year. Admit I had something to say to him, mainly because I was afraid I might have squashed the silly sod - but got plenty of nasty vitriol from him after I left the tunnel clear and made a comment about doing so - most of which was about respective licence fees.
I genuinely did NOT know that they are allowed through most tunnels....
(eta - I meant paddleboarder, not Weil's disease - though I do know a chap who worked in a marina who was very, very seriously ill with that)

When still very young, my cousin Jan, whose family lived in Hillmorton at the time, plonked me onto the handlebars of his racing bike and took me for a full-tilt ride along the towpath and through Newbold tunnel, which in those days was not as pretty as it is now. Most exhilarating and never forgotten.
Jan was the sort of cousin who would supply pints to children at weddings. π

As I understand it they are supposed to display a number and have insurance (which they have if they are members of British canoe union.) But how many do that?

Across the cut is annoying - something nearly invisible inside a tunnel as you're approaching in tonnes of steel with a couple of feet to spare each side wondering what the little torch bobbing around might be about is more than a bit disconcerting. To hold your boat idling the whole time it decides to traverse the tunnel and then be abused because you make a sarky comment after allowing it to (apparently no licence needed if you're a member of a club??! and sworn at instead of thanked) didn't do much for my day! Never mind, worse things happen at sea!

Cutting the boards with cordless chainsaw is enormously good fun.
It goes Eeeerrrzzzzplosh!
I'd do more if I could but have been restricted to cross bow and torpedoes only on account of the machine noise drowning out the birdsong.
This is one of the issues with occupying part of a country estate. One's behaviour is restricted.
Quite shocking in a number of ways.

You're right, kris - he had lots to say but nothing to show! Had I entered the tunnel and caused him any damage we all know who'd be to blame...and identified...

I think itβs strange they can go on lots more water courses than we can. But they choose the polluted, highly boat populated canal. There is a river with no boats on it 150-200m away from where I am now?

Nail gun with an extra long discharge tube can work. Use surface piercing nails to catch the blighters unaware.
We have developed drawing pin nets but it will be a number of yars before they are available on the internet.

Some people think these are rigid boards.
