I recounted this discussion to Jeff. He is also with First Direct. He did have to visit the local branch (of HSBC) a few years ago, that being the last time. He had found some old banknotes that were no longer legal tender. So much for the “I promise to pay the bearer…” shite. He went into the branch and the smartly dressed staff were milling around with iPads in quite a plush lobby. But when said he wanted to proffer some cash, he was despatched off to the dirty dingy basement where some grumpy old gezer was standing behind a bullet-proof glass screen attending to other cash customers, all of whom were obviously drug dealers.
So there you have it, cash users are either aging brain cell challenged dinosaurs who can’t cope with a card or a phone, or they are drug dealers. Take your pick.

. Just tonight, we were in a riverside bar in Ely and when I pulled out my phone to pay for the drinks using Applepay, 10p fell out of my pocket onto the floor. A kindly little old lady bent down and picked it up for me. It was so humiliating. She was probably closer to the floor than you, so thought she would save you the extra effort. Just today, putting the car back in the garage, i saw a 2p on the ground and picked it up. I never pass by an opportunity to increase my wealth. Look after the pennies etc..... Back to the original post, I've changed 2 or 3 times without problems, but everyone wants you to bank with the app. I use a separate tablet when out and use the normal browser as I have the same protection as on my computer.

A couple of years ago I arrived home after nine months boating to find my years bank statements.
Checking through I discovered a direct debit paying some stranger £300 a month, plus a pile of letters advising me I had incurred bank charges for being overdrawn due to it.
I speedily visited my then open branch and a very helpful lady sorted it all out, and returned my money with a little extra for my trouble.
Apparently someone had hit a wrong key inputting information and I was the lucky 'winner'.
Fortunately I checked my statements, but I am not a fan of the reliability of people using computers.
When things go wrong I like to have a person to help me sort it out.

To be fair if cash is taken out of the equation some communities are going to be hit pretty hard.
In other news I saw a large and very mice Dutch barge today which had... wait for it.... FAKE RIVETS!
first time I have ever seen this phenomenon on a non-narrow boat.
I've been excused life duties tomorrow so should be able to get a picture.
I was well shocked.

If you had the App on your phone, one thumb press would have shown you the first rogue payment and you could then have immediately telephoned the bank and had it resolved. Your way, the problem persisted for months and you had to spend time travelling to the branch (maybe incurring travelling expenses such as petrol or bus fare) to sort it out. Sounds like you were lucky you didn’t go to an ATM for cash one day, and find your request denied due to exceeding your overdraft limit, and you left temporarily destitute.

I had shit loads of money at one stage and now I have not a lot but fortunately a massive legacy on the way.
I'm quite disturbed by the fact that making no effort ever and holding no investments of any sort tends to result in no money.
Maybe strategic changes are needed when I get the legacy.
Getting a job seems awfully infra dig and against the principles I have held dear for the last 31 yars. How difficult can it be ?

An argument is making one’s case in a debate / discussion. It only has implications of being adversarial if you choose to use it in that context. I didn’t. My point was that you were inadvertently making the case for internet banking.

Having a cheery, and friendly personality, coupled with boyish good looks and charisma, I enjoy socialising with staff at banks, shops, pubs and cafe's and I am always well received and my visits appreciated. I can see why Telemachus chooses online banking poor love 😊 Rog But do you use the self checkouts at supermarkets?

I have ... but I usually pick an attractive and friendly lady on a till.
The prices are the same if I do the work or I let paid staff.
Additionally I have found that self service tills are constantly calling for staff approval to such a degree it's as quick to deal with staff from the start.
But I'm just expressing opinion, not trying to tell anyone they're wrong 👍

It’s another one of those things that people have been lead to. Doing the supermarkets work for them, whilst undermining peoples jobs. Supermarket jobs probably aren’t the best, but people need work. All these modern convienences will put lots of people out of work. With the advent of AI it’s going to get worse, because it’s going to be the white collar professions that are going to be automated next. So my question is who is going to buy all these products that our military industrial complex keeps churning out, if no one’s got a job? Time for universal basic income me thinks.
