Waterways Ireland are proposing to introduce increases in permit fees from between 400% and 2,000% depending on the area, aside from the very real threat of driving members of our community into homelessness,

Yes it’s been tried twice before I believe. I can’t understand how they could justify increases of such amounts.

Do they actually need to justify it?
When we were kids if we said 'Its not fair' mother would always immediately point out the basic fact that 'nothing is fair'.
Is there a particular reason why a navigation authority in charge of managing an inland waterways network would have to behave reasonably?
Surely they can just behave unreasonably if they want to subject to legal restrictions.
I don't understand why they would have to justify things. At the end of the day they have a captive audience who have been lulled into a false sense of security thinking living on boats will always be cheap. Its like the dope pedlar giving free samples to the kids.
Its just normal business operations and market economy. If you can't afford it you don't have it.

You couldn’t afford to have kids but you had them?

Thats just nature for you.
The topic was about boats.
I'm all in favour of people claiming from the state to pay their boating costs but if they can't prove eligibility then they have to pay their way.
If things get more expensive, which always happens, then you either pay more, get help or don't have it.
It is a basic rule of economics.

When I was a kid I said to my Mum "It's not fair, there's a Mother's Day and a Father's Day, why isn't there a Children's Day?" and she said "Every Day is Children's Day".

With those sort of increases, how would it work economically for them to transport over to the UK and doss on the K&A or around London. CaRT's tardiness should give them a few years grace.

I reckon it might be about a hundred irish euros for a licence.
