They've been around a while now and seem to be waning slightly ... perhaps other social media is taking over.
I came across a post on CWDF I made back in 2014, and was now able to answer my own query with the benefit of experience.
I joined that forum around 2012, here in 2016 and the Bar in 2020, but I'm aware that many here have been involved with these and other forums for much longer.
Wondered what your history was and do you think in general they are passe and a failing media ?

As far as I'm aware of these things I understand that all the cool kids use instagram or some such and it's all entirely phone-based. Forums, being something that developed in the early days of the net, are like dinosaurs and used chiefly by oldies and cranks. Or old cranks.

I joined CWDF around 2008 I think. Although I had a degree in electrical and electronic engineering, I did learn a lot from the forum about things electrical as they relate to boats. And a lot of other stuff. Now I tend to give back rather than receive. Before that I was on PPruNe (aviation forum) in particular the Rotorheads (helicopter pilot section) where I was a major participant for a while arguing with the manufacturers etc. More recently I am on Briskoda (Skoda forum). Anything you want to know about a Skoda is on that forum - very helpful.
I am not really on farcebook because I hate the disorganised way things appear on it - not to mention the closed group thing which creates hotbeds of unchallenged misinformation. I am not on Instagram because I don't particularly want to post selfies or what I had for dinner.
Oh and I am also on Gliderpilot.net which is not so much a forum, more a newsgroup (Newsgroups being the first iteration of social media from the 80s).
So apart from facebook, I am not sure what other "social media" you might be thinking of. Personally I think forums have a lot of life remaining as they provide a well organised source of information and ability to discuss specific topics.
Not this one of course, this one deserves to be nuked.

I joined CWDF in 2006.
I go on the Thames forum as well but that is very quiet.
Never log in to any Meta platforms at all as I despise them.
One day I'll get a job and do something interesting with my time.

I am aware (thanks to quaysider ) that lots now communicate through twitter, instagram and similar platforms. I suppose posting can be more random on such platforms (as in not following individual threads) but having never visited any I have no direct understanding. Rog

I was briefly involved with another forum ostensibly concerned with technical matters but it soon became obvious it was more a platform for a small group of people to congratulate themselves on being really great and an opportunity to be mean and spiteful to anyone else. Then I found TB. What a refreshing change. Just the mean and spiteful part. 😁

OVer the years (and periods of fleeting interest in "other things") I've joined lots of Car owner forums... from The T Bar (MGF/TFs) to Saab, Merc, Volvo (pretty much whatever banger I'd bought to do up and sell on) - even a 'Detailing' one at one point...
My use has been a combination of fact-finding and sharing things I'd found out about whatever car I was enthusiastic about at the time.
With boats it's sort of different - just having a boat keeps me dipping in when I get time (or having nothing better to do like today)... I'm trying to avoid booking a hotel for a bath night or having a drink (trying to get to the end of the month dry.
As Rog states, Twitter (well now X) from a business point of view is easy to update on the go - most of it rubbish I admit and half the time I can't even be arsed to do THAT these days - SO many people are just shouting in the abyss in the hope of not being forgotten about
Me included sometimes.

I'm on the TruckNet internet forum which is the natural meeting place for Yorkie-munching prostitute murderers, and a few Facebook groups, like for the Honda Express and the Vespa which are both useful resources for info, finding spares etc. Also Narrowboat Moaners and Ranters on FB which is amusing at times.
