Where has anyone said its a bad thing? (apart from in your usual βvictimβ based interpretationπ)
They have got some free publicity on a UK boat forum, surely a positive thing?

Itβs changed already Andrew the good old days you keep harping on about are gone. I donβt think you can blame the NBTA for that. All the you tube vlogs telling everyone how wonderful it is and how cheap are more to blame in my opinion. So anyway whatβs so bad about a group organising a social gathering for its members. Nothing wrong with a social gathering. Yes times have changed. Anyway one day I'll get orf the canals permanently. Curious coincidence is it looks like it might be 30 yars to within a week or two since I first got on the canals. Not a bad stint I suppose but the next 30 will be much better spent on the River. I can't do social gatherings as always end up the last person to leave and it is tiring.

Youβve seen the best of the canals. As you say youβve had a good stint, but that is the past unfortunately. The future doesnβt look so rosey. But I really think it is disingenuous to blame nbta for that change. Come on your more intelligent than that.

You could be right.
I dislike it when people aggressively claim rights they don't have.
There is a lot of politics around as well which is rather boring.
Its nothing to do with boats.

Itβs a different world than 30years ago. Society has changed, the waterways are not separate from society so they have changed as well. The proliferation of social media is having an adverse effect on the human race in my opinion.

I think a lot of people are blissfully unaware of the impact of social media on society.
I have for a long time held the view that it is incredibly damaging. I know Aldous Huxley went to Eton and all that but he was right. Devices have indeed been produced which can be used to manipulate people very effectively.
The Smartphone is a classic example. It is very solitary. My kids don't have these but everyone else at school does
It is too powerful and while giving the illusion of empowering people the ones in charge consist of a very small number and they have a very high standard of living. Apart from the bodyguards obviously.
This is exactly what is happening and it is very dangerous.
Do humans really want to be sleepwalking into this ?

This geyser knew his shit.
The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.
Nobody would have the staying power to watch this these days because they need tik tok and youtube shorts.
Dumbing Down.

Yes I think your right. It seems the systems of control have turned it up to 11 over the last few years. Unfortunately as you say most people are sleep walking into a reality that really is quite dystopian. I think most governments secretly look up to china and the amount of monitoring and control they have over their population. They are introducing the same systems but in a more covert method.

It is very solitary. Actually Aldous' contention was that people tend toward sensuality rather than intellectualism simply because it's the path of least resistance, and that the ruling hegemony actively encourages the population toward that end in the name of 'happiness' and, in the vocabulary of BNW, social stability. 'Progress' is not required. The gadgets are simply intended to amuse and distract. And for anybody experiencing ennui, doubt or a lack of contentment, there's always 'soma'. In Aldous' day radio was still young but could be described as a sort of social media, used to fill in the empty moments of the day with noise. FYI, Mustapha Mond would not have been interested in anything which promoted solitary behaviour.

Did you watch the interview?
This isn't what he talks about. He is predicting a time when technological devices are used to control people. Radio was used by Hitler my hero to manipulate people using propaganda.
I have not read the book as don't read books but the interview is actually quite interesting.

Remind me what the ACC did for boaters? How much were membership fees?

I have not read the book as I spend an inordinate amount of time talking from my arsehole.

Yes. And before today. I feel that the interviewer constantly asks leading questions and effectively controls the conversation.
