Notice Alert Trent & Mersey Canal Location: Harecastle Tunnel, Trent & Mersey Canal Starts At: Harecastle Tunnel Ends At: Harecastle Tunnel Up Stream Winding Hole: Junction of Macclesfield Down Stream Winding Hole: South Portal Thursday 9 November 2023 09:00 until further notice Type: Navigation Closure Reason: Boat damage Original message: Please be aware we have had to close Harecastle Tunnel until further notice. The rudder has snapped on the rescue boat and it requires an urgent repair. Unfortunately, we canβt have passages through the tunnel without this rescue boat, as it is specific to rescues for the tunnel. We are currently looking at alternatives for what we can do. We will know more as soon as we have established the extent of the damage. Please look out for further updates. There was a time not so long ago they owned enough boats to simply replace it whilst repairs were completed.
Maybe one of the 'new' contractors who bought all their equipment would 'lend' them a boat π

As it is a tunnel, why can't they use a couple of blokes with poles to steer in the most unlikely event that it is called upon. Is the description of Boat Damage an attempt to classify it as an occurence beyond their control in much the same way as Vandalism, or boat damage as in lifting or crashing into lock gates by boaters?

Their boat is damaged. i wonder if by 'the rudder snapped' what was actually meant was 'the tiller snapped'. Slightly silly steering gear is common on these ex BW work boats. it seems highly unimprobable that this POS tiller could rust out and fall over at deck level. Probably originally designed to be removed when not in use but gets left on and creates a corrosion trap.
