Don't you get tired of the same reports kris ? The lady quoted complaining about being charged extra for living on a 'boat that moves' has lived aboard in London for over two years ... not moved very far. Young professionals looking for cheap living in the capital ... sadly that bird has flown. Rog

I get tired of crt and all their bullshit. But no I don’t get tired of bringing attention to the perilous state of the waterways. I’d like future generations to be able to enjoy them, in the same way that myself and thousands of others have. But I fear by the time parry and his regime have finished, that won’t be possible.

Yes I agree. The problem is if the Parry geyser was removed someone else the same would turn up. These people are generic it seems to he how the system works. Its too easy to blame the management.

It's an expensive place to live ... hell it's even expensive to holiday there !
Let's be honest, there's too many living on the capital's streets for various reasons, who must attract greater sympathy surely ?

Toey government needs to have homeless people to help trigger thick people when it comes to election time. No way would they want to lose this valuable opportunity.

If the 'country' chose five primary issues for the new government to focus on post election, does anyone truly think C&RT or the waterways would be included ?
I doubt if ten were picked it would be included.
I fear we are going to be paying much closer to 'our way' in future.

Canals are quite exclusive other than use of the towpath lane.

I’ve said for years I wouldn’t mind paying more if it gets spent on the waterways maintenance. Crt hemmorage money on things that are not directly related to waterways maintenance,(remember I worked for them for four years. I’ve met and talked to parry on numerous occasions.) The policy parry has at the moment of trying to threaten the goverment. As in the article posted at the beginning of this thread, is a very dangerous game to be playing. What I’ve heard from different sources, is that crt really fucked up the negotiations over funding with the government. They where very antagonistic and got the goverment negotiaters backs up. So I think a change of regime would be a good thing, even if parry has sold the family silver off already. A ground up membership led organisation would be my solution. You have to take into consideration, that the waterways are always going to have to be subsidised by the goverment, because of the function they play as part of the water drainage network. Let alone all of the other benefits they bring to the country. So not matter how much they might like to,the goverment is never going to be able to wash its hands of them completely.

I'm more than happy to see the end of Mr Parry's term, and indeed the replacement of C&RT.
However it would not be a magic wand that cured all ills.
Whoever runs the navigation authority will be facing the same issues and most probably be promoting the same or very similar solutions.

Rog Very true, but at least if we had an organisation that had the interests of the waterways as it’s focus rather than property development. We might see the situation improve. Just starting to do preventative maintenance again rather than not touching something until it breaks, would be a major improvement.

There's a difference between the parlous state of the waterways and freeloaders not wanting to pay their way, though the latter may contribute (as little as possible) towards the former.

A simple change to the charity, to one with membership control, like the National Trust, would work the way you propose kris. The current set up, while fulfilling charity regs, gives no say to users who pay their way.
