I suspect these are all pretty similar in their workings?
Mine is fitted so neutral is lever pointing down and back. Moving it forwards to go forwards it engages gear when it's pointing straight downwards and it's awkward to use.
The lever is unnecessarily long too, so if I were to point it upwards it would foul the hatch as well as reversing what seems like sensible action - forwards for forwards.
Peering round the back it looks like I could move the gear cable to the other side of it's lever to reverse the action and obtain a shorter lever.
Does that sound sensible? Maybe neutral pointing up and backwards so it's in forward gear at tickover when it's vertical?
I've never had a boat with an engine before, how do people set theirs up?
Also, there is a loose locknut on each cable under the fittings, none on top. Could this account for 45 degrees slack either side of neutral before anything happens, or is that normal?
'scuse my ignorance, I got in a bit of a pickle yesterday and this control was not helping!

Too slow! It's all going to work out except one thing, which may be why it's arse about face. The lever for the gear change has two holes each end, presumably to move more or less cable. It was fitted on the outer hole but when I swap sides, due to the lever skimming past some 4mm plate, it will only fit on the inside and pull less cable. Is this likely to be a problem? Gearbox is (I think) PRM hydraulic. I know I could try it, just thought I'd ask for tips, maybe something is adjustable at the gearbox end if it doesn't work? A similar multi hole lever perhaps? It's rather difficult to access.
