How is it we see lots of pictures on the news of the farmers up rising in India, but the european farmers protests are hardly covered at all on the news? Mind you the India farmers are really hardcore. I didn’t realise that the last farmers protest a few years ago, lasted for a year and 600 people died during it.

The likes of the BBC choose not to give a lot of coverage to news items contrary to the European order. You might have a bit more luck if you choose an alternative broadcaster.

Well it is obviously a good thing then, because in any other year a lot more than 600 people died.

When I lived in India, baja introduced the first disc brake on a motorbike. Unfortunately it wasn’t anti lock. It killed over 10,000 people before they where made to change it. Also in Delhi there was a street stall selling a health tonic that killed about 800 people before they found it. So death is always close in India, but imagine the reaction if one farmer had died in Europe.

In the UK we have had many decades of motorbike disc brakes without anti-lock, and as far as I know new bikes don't need anti-lock brakes although they are pretty common these days I believe. My most recent bike, at 2008 Hayabusa, doesn't have anti-lock brakes.

It’s just what happened. It’s an example of causes of death in India. Your the one who was making jokes about the death of people. The subject of the thread is why we don’t see as much media coverage of the european farmers as we do as the Indian. Do you have anything to say on this subject?

It was 45 degrees, all new to me, I was completely out of my depth. Within an hour I saw a motor bike crash into a fruit stall. Scuffle ensued followed by a policeman beating the shit out of the pair of them. The one that really sticks in my mind though: dead woman on a busy road in Agra. 3 hours later, she was still there. Bet you could tell some stories.

Yes I lived there for about 7years, so I’ve seen some things. It’s an eye opening country and it definately changed my perception of life having lived there. The Hindus belief in reincarnation definately colours their view of death.

The Hindus believe in reincarnation definately colours their view of death. Just 6 months for me although I've also been on a couple of shorter trips. Hated it at first but it grew on me once I got into the swing of things. Religion is something you can find anywhere but India just exudes spirituality. Definitely changed my outlook too, along with more time I spent further east. Probably contributed as much towards forming my political views as the much greater amount of time I've spent in the cosseted developed west.

I last went 4 years ago, I was surprised how much it had changed. No spitting in the streets any more. Loads of middle class Indians living it up with cars, staying in nice hotels, posh meals etc. Despite this, you can still get a thali for 50 rupees and a chai for 8. Police still beating people up. 2 lady officers set on a bloke at Trivandrum rail station for not having a valid ticket, then the bloke at left luggage for accepting my bag when my ticket had expired. I was escorted off the premises, knowing a backward glance would have resulted in a beating. French bloke running a hotel without a visa given a serious kicking in full view of a cafe full of tourists.

I’ve not been for a long while. It changed very rapidly in the time I was there, I can imagine 10-11 years later that the pace of change has kept the same, so the changes will be massive. It became the most populace country last year. It’s on its way to being the third largest economy. It’s put a spacecraft near the South Pole of the moon. Not even Russia or America have done that yet. So it’s a country definately on the up. It’s just a pity about all of the inter communal violence that is happening in the name of fundamental hinduism. This has always happened, Christian where regularly being killed in the NE when I lived there. But it’s definately increased whilst modi has been in power.

I read the news every day but this is the first I've heard of an Indian farmer's strike. I imagine it's more of a big deal since a fair bunch of them will be on the edge of poverty already; my perception is that India is still a largely agrarian society.
It's funny in a bad way that India can send a rocket to the moon but so many are starving etc. Still, things are hardly much different here. Billions for bombs but not a lot for social housing.
BTW there's been a private enterprise launch targeting the southern lunar pole today. American project.
