I've had reason to pass through Caenarfon a few times over the past few months. So shocking were the sights that I determined to write about the town. However, to be fair: The town has a rather splendid castle and sits on the banks of the magnificent Menai Straight. It would be unfair to describe a place with such assets as truly grim. So, I parked the idea.
A few weeks back I happened across an episode of 'Murder by the sea'. My interest was drawn when I heard the village of PENYGROES mentioned as I pass through there, en route to Caenarfon. There was a gruesome muder there, back in 2016. Now interested, I studied the village as best I could from a mostly moving bus. So grim was this village that I made a special effort to visit on my motorbike, for a proper look.
The first thing you notice as you approach PENYGROES is a rusting bus in the middle of a random field, 200 yards or so from the road. Could this be an indicator of a village rich in art, Gwynedd's answer to Hebden Bridge perhaps? Sadly, this was about as good as it got.
Entering the village there was a cul de sac with around 10 houses. Grey render, council or ex. council, the colour matching the sky. It rains a lot in PENYGROES. Not to the same extent as Capel Curig 15 miles up in the mountains but still, it's a lot. Only the slightly darker grey of the mountains behind broke up the depressing aura of general light greyness. 10 houses isn't really enough to suggest community but there was a palpable air of hostility. I didn't feel threatened. Rather, that I was an intruder. Like I was the only person who'd ever walked up this road, not having a proper reason for doing so. Most of the houses bore evidence of life. There was a headless doll in one front garden. A heavily rusted washing machine outside one house with an ambitious sign 'free to a good home' stuck to it. Another house had what looked a like a very heavily soiled mattress leaning against a delipidated shed in the side garden.
Feeling slightly nauseous, I escaped the street from hell and proceeded down the high street. Things could only get better, surely?
I didn't see many people during my walk. Each person I passed in the street looked at me longer than was natural. Not in a threatening manner. Rather, like they were thinking; what are you doing here? The faces and eyes of these people all told the same story. At first I thought of communist Russia but the people there had spirit and fight. And then I thought of images taken during the liberation of Nazi concentration camps. Blank faces, all spirit quashed, resigned to utter hopelessness.
It was uncanny how similar everyone looked. Gaunt men with greasy hair and Billy Connolly beards. Women with sallow skin, short brown hair, around 5 foot 5. It was if if the entire village had been fathered by one man.
Part 2 coming up but in the meantime: I know it's a tough call around the canal network, but how about a truly grim place you've been to?

Next time take a trip up to Nantlle, only a few miles away. Let me know what you observe.

There have been horrific murders in really nice places.
At the end of the day a healthy functioning society needs murderers. Without this there would be a void.
People who kill others should not be constrained as to the chosen location. One should be free to do this anywhere otherwise there is a danger of discrimination.

Some places look grim some look nice. I find it is a vibe thing. Some places have a bad energy regardless of the aesthetics.

Give me a flavour of what I might expect, I'll likely do that. I'll not spoil things by giving my view of the village, go with an open mind and report back. Scene of a horrific murder is all I'll say. It's not too far away, I'll visit. I had a quick google 'murder Nantlle'. Part 2 of the Penygroes commentary was going to make reference to 2 murders in the village but now we have a third that's associated with there. 'Nantlle' being the name of the school in the village. An ex-pupil actually escaped the village and moved to Australia, where he killed his neighbour with a hammer. A saying springs readily to mind: 'class is permanent'.

One of my classmates at school was Very Bad and did terrible things but got away with it.
He currently resides in a very pleasant residence in south west London but has to keep looking over his shoulder.
Terrible really considering the fact the only people he killed were proper wrong ones.

Part 2: Funnily enough last night I happened across 'Killer in my village'. As soon as I heard PENYGROES my interest was gained. It was another take on the crowbar murder of Emma Baum in 2016. Plenty of images of grim street scenes, as you expect. The shock of the evening was when PENYGROES was described as 'a beautiful Welsh village'. It's clearly best never to take anything journalists or film makers tell us seriously. Here's a picture of the Killer, David Davies. He's from Trefor rather than PENYGROES but fits the stereotypical image of men from PENYGROES perfectly. data:image/jpeg;base64,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 Back in 2012 a PENYGROES woman was convicted of the murder of her neightbour. I'm OK with physical stuff and making mad things from bits and pieces but I'll happilly admit to being a dinosaur, in terms of technology.
