'The cuckoo comes in April She sings her song in May In leafy June She changes her tune And July She flies away'
I wondered if anyone's heard one yet, and if so where ?
We heard them early April 2022 on the North Stratford heading into Birmingham ... not this year sadly.

When I was young, Mum & Dad often took us walking, mainly in the Chiltern hills, hearing a Cuckoo became symbolised with Dad getting us lost again! (and time for Mum to take over the map reading...)!
I still worry when I hear a cuckoo...

My old Mum used to tell us that poem (think it's traditional not attributed) and my younger sister used to recite it to me every year before asking if we'd yet heard one 😊

Has a report from a good mate and local twitcher that there is one about a mile away from us. Yet to wander over to hear it's dulcet tone.

God save thee ancient mariner, from the fiends that plague thee thus! Why lookst though so? With my crossbow I SHOT THE ALBATROSS".

The fair breeze blew, the white foam flew, The furrow followed free; We were the first that ever burst Into that silent sea.

Big fan of the ancient mariner always brings a tear to the eye.

Any updates ?
We were out walking at Frickley Park today where we've heard cuckoo's in previous years, but sadly nothing.
Off to Worsborough Dam tomorrow so 🤞🤞
Supposed to be 19 degrees but strong winds ... just be nice if not raining to be honest ☀️

The grammar school I attended used to hold the prizegiving at Birmingham Town Hall every September, where the music master revelled in being let loose on the organ. It was a tradition that the new first formers would perform as a choir, and the year that I was 1st form, the song we had to sing was The Cuckoo, apparently a medieval song sung in the round. The intensive rehersals over the first 4 weeks of school scarred me for life.

We heard and actually saw cuckoo's at Whixall Moss a few years ago ... good views in the bins.
Jane's sister has a cuckoo that has visited regularly at the back of her home in the Wakefield / Pontefract area, but last year it didn't turn up.
We're hoping it makes a return this year 🤞🤞
