I hope the pictures work. Te first one shows the front carrier. This is made from key clamps and aluminium tubing. The clamp around the engine crash bar tightens down to it. I've wrapped tape around the crash bar to prevent too much damage, when I do this. The idea with the bit that hangs down is to brace against the lower crash bar to prevent any possible twisting. imgur.com/SPMfgLINext is the rear carrier. I had a steel plate welded to a 27mm mild steel tube. There's a handy hole in the frame of the bike which the plate locates to with an 8mm bolt and nylock nut. Then we have key clamps and aluminium tubing. imgur.com/VMVH0w1The final image shows my surfboard in situ, only just sticking out beyond the extent of the handlebars. It seems to me in this situation one should have two surfboards and matching racks for them.
I suppose it must be a bit awkward not being able to get off but it seems to provide some side impact protection. Presumably this is the side which is statistically more likely to get accidentally hit by other vehicles.

Yes I'm more than happy with it. I tore up at least 4 other ideas before deciding on this one. Had some useful advice on here, that definitely helped.
I'll mostly use it to go down to the local beach. Only 15 minutes walk but a right pain carrying a board. It also opens up another spot, Llwyngwril, which on its day can be top class. It's quick and easy to take on and off. Just a 7mm allen key at the front, 6mm at the back.

Just out of curiosity, why two different size but similar tools? The key clamps utilise a 7mm allen key, the 8mm bolt needs a 6mm key. Ideally, they would have both been the same but the hole in the bike frame takes a maximum 8mm bolt. |

It’s a piece of cheap crap, you cheapskate. I suppose I could have enlisted the services of a design engineer. He might have recommended titanium uprights for a 100g weight saving. Maybe he could have project managed the whole thing, it being presented to me, all gleaming and bright, fitted and ready to go. But you know: when you're a little old it's good to keep active. Exercise is one thing, I do plenty of that but it's also good to challenge the mind as well. Use it or lose it and all that. Others might busy themselves with negativity but personally, I enjoy designing things, making things and fixing things. |

Looks wise it reminds me a little of the ‘sidewinder’ side car rigs that lads used to get around the (250cc?) change in bike license rules back in the day. As you say, it’s good to challenge yourself and build/design something useful. |
