As ex ARMY I support British Legion in all they do. 100 years ago the worst war ever was being fought, unfortunately by old farts of Generals with modern tools. Millions lost their lives to rescue us from the old class ways and every day I thank them for their sacrifice, as without it we would not be the nation we are now. God bless them, may they rest in peace and be remembered for ever

Sorry but I don't subscribe to the "Lions led by Donkeys" thought process. That apart I had my own personal couple of minutes reflection and thought of this grave stone near Ulster Tower on the Somme A family devastated no doubt....like millions of others on all sides.

Only one member of my family was on the Western Front in the Great War and he came home. He didn't talk about it and if asked would just go quiet.
He had been a "sapper". What little we know of his war came from my Grandmother after his death. In the second World War, no member of my family was in the armed forces.
During the two world wars my family gained 1 Lloyds gold war medal, 1 Lloyds silver medal, 1 OBE ......and lost five dead all from the merchant and fishing fleets.
It is worth remembering that there is a remembrance service in September for the Merchant Navy (Next year 3rd Sept) at the Merchant Navy memorial on Tower Hill which commemorates over 35,000 Merchant Navy officers and men whose only grave is the sea.

I heard recently that when my grandad (father's father) came back from WW2 our granny ordered him to burn his uniform and not to speak of the dreadful things he may have done. It's a pity he's not alive now, as I would like to have asked him all about his life. People should really write everything down for their descendants to read.

I had to do Army in the comptempary world in it we learnt about about the first world war and donkeys was to kind a word for them! These soldiers above could easily have died because instead of charging across the battlefield using cover they were made to walk in nice straight lines..........................

I've been to a few of the Belgian graveyards, when I was in Belgium in the truck overnight I often spent an hour or so walking around, looking at the names on the stones and wondering about that person, his short life and his terrifying situation at the end of it. It was always incredibly moving.

Also a good time to reflect on the rise of Nationalism and far right politics that lead to many of their deaths.

It was always incredibly moving. We did a battlefields tour years ago which was very moving. When we listened to the Last Post at the Menin gate,I was in absolute pieces. My grandad did come home...minus an arm & with lots of shrapnel embedded in his body.He died before I was born but I always think about him when I buy my poppy.

I think that was a bit of a cheap dig at me for a post I made on another thread, and I agree that it isn't really appropriate on this thread.

I hate war. Too many of my relatives have died in wars. Me too. As one of my favourite authors, George Orwell said, "War against a foreign country only happens when the moneyed classes think they are going to profit from it".
