I don't understand how jenlyn can read my posts after he's blocked them. He must be telepathetic or something.

I think he reads your posts...... just not the cut n paste rambles you're prone to putting up. Have to say I'm the same. What you have to say is interesting.....but the rest.......and mention of a certain newspaper is a real turn off. Just saying Rog

Thanks for reminding me... haven't seen the News today... Daily Mail quick glance before I clamber back on board. Aerial view of boat now from my table at the Brewers Fare, Salterbebble... loads of smoke belching out of the chimney. New 12v lights to be put up when I get back to our own parking spot.

Moored at Middlewich, so of course we've walked as far as is possible to view the breech.
C&RT have many signs up explaining, and identifying how to donate.
They have boarded off the towpath (obviously) but left viewing windows, and from the number of large family groups visiting that we saw, I hope lots of money will be raised.
The notices state they don't yet know for sure what caused the breech, but suggest excessive water due to paddles being left open at Stanthorne lock may have caused it.
It looks like a bomb crater.
One can clearly see the red shale type strata underneath the clay of the canal bed.
I have no civil engineering knowledge, but that explanation is not persuasive to me when looking at the damage.
I still think access for heavy plant is going to be an issue, should farmers be uncooperative.
It's the first time I've seen a canal breach 'in the flesh'.
It is quite incredible.

I reckon it was caused by a boat being moored there running engine in gear leading to a hole being created below the concrete capping on the canal bank.
Once water started getting through under there it was just a matter of time before a major failure occurred. No idea when that concrete was put on there but it is not the original canal bank I don't believe.

Their explanation/theory did also include a mention that the embankment was totally sodden already due to a wet winter.
I hope a cause can be established, but suspect anyone's theory is as good as the next one.
Looking at the red shale the embankment is formed from I'm kind of surprised how long it's lasted.
It is a massive job.

As someone pointed out, I think on the cwdf thread, if you google satellite and look to the West of the viaduct, on the South side of the canal there is clearly a large bywash type overflow into an underground "something". It's been suggested that this could have been blocked or collapsed.

Well, it'll be true if it's on CWDF.

Well, it'll be true if it's on CWDF. Rog The bywash thing is there. A fookin great hole because someone left the paddles open is a bit lame! Typical blame attchment, "wasn't our fault mate" posturing. I hate blame attachment.

I wonder how much time will elapse between repair of the towpath and repair of the waterway. I can't help thinking this could be an ideal opportunity for crt to engage with the towpath using public. No hurry to get the boats back. canalrivertrust.org.uk/news-and-views/news

I still think access for heavy plant is going to be an issue, should farmers be uncooperative. Of course it will be an issue if the farmer/s are uncooperative but rest assured farmers are business people and compensating them for a year's worth of crops over two small fields will not be expensive in the grand scheme of things.

It's the time lost to any 'negotiations' I was referring to.
I'm sure access will involve payments, but such negotiations could drag on somewhat.
If everything goes well, my bet is still that the canal will be open by the end of July.
It'll be interesting to see.

Last major breach took 7 months to sort apparently. Dutton 2012.
Do the navigation authority have to pay for access? That seems wrong. I'm sure the highways agency have rights across private land and the electric board.
I guess in the old days this would all be done by water. The hole would be stanked off and work equipment materials and men would be brought there by water and it would just get sorted out.
The joys of modern technology.

Rog If those negotiations havn't already been completed then that is either the fault of CRT being unfair or caused by an obstroboluse (sp?) land owner. If that the later case is happening then CRT should be publishing the fact to the local area/press - nothing like peer pressure to resolve matters.
