Going through the delights of Stalybridge again. What a dump, even though the natives do seem friendly. I think we will risk the Rochdale, Thursday morning. Probably live to regret it!

I need to get my boat down to Sowerby wharf, before it shuts. I'd be more than happy to join you as you come by, share locks etc, then I'd leave it there till September when we are going on a trip, possibly to Sheffield. I can probably lock wheel for you out of Littleborough, Saturday?? I've had an email, cos my mooring is affected, telling me to talk to the local moorings manager if I'm away and can't get back. I want to do the opposite, I consider it "reasonable in the circumstances" to leave my boat at Sowerby for more than 14 days without moving it. Maybe pm me your itinerary etc.?

Yes I think we shall have to give up, unless there is a favourable update on Tuel in the next day or two (unlikely!).

Aarrgh! Just read latest post on analworld, Tuel Deep closed ufn due to lack of water. Tuel Lane Lock 140,000 gallons for short bosts, 190,000 gallons for longer boats. Nick could park up in Hebden Bridge, The Lesbian Capital of the cuntry.

Your jinxing all the northern waterways, you should just turn round and go back south.

Yea but, no but, yea.... the north is already closed due to lack of interest. I'm hoping the south stays open from all the north's water draining down hill Rog

Last night spent in Droylesden Marina, I have to say a lovely haven in a shit town, we were made to feel very welcome and all for sick squid. Very peaceful night. Today we did Ashton 18 and Rochdale 9, then got pissed on Peroni in the shade at Castlefield junction. Great!

Nick's only way out now is along the Bridgewater which he will enjoy as you can let rip in the deep water. We be approaching Middlewich now. 23 locks up tomorrow to get to Harecastle Tunnel. Up at 4am to avoid the heat.

Now wouldn't it be terrible if the Hudson owners got stuck in the north somewhere. Dam it looks like nicks escaped already, I was thinking it would be funny, if the lesbian hating Nick got stuck in hebden bridge for six months or so.

I have diarised all the faults in the Ashton and Rochdale, to go with my fault list for the Huddersfield Narrow, and will shortly compose a large missive to be sent to Mr Parry and NW regional manager. To be filed under B for Bin, no doubt!
It will include our encounter on the Ashton with 3 CRT bods in T shirts emblazoned with the “making life better by water” shite, none of whom gave us the time of day and just looked taciturn and grumpy. And the 4th CRT bod who had been called out to one of the Rochdale 9 locks (I think 89?) due to a top paddle that didn’t really close. People waiting to come up. Lock full, so naturally I went in and took charge despite the protests from those waiting to come up who had been there for 2 hours and couldn’t drain the lock, I assessed the top paddle which was definitely wonky. But anyway opened the bottom paddles having attached our bow rope to one of the bottom gates. With 3 people pushing on the gate and Telemachus pulling in reverse, we managed to open the gate - just. I exited the lock pronto and advised the 2 boats waiting to go up to get in and close the gate ASAP before the pound above drained. Just then the CRT bod arrived looking grumpy. When the problem was explained, apparently he just said “Oh we know about that paddle” and became even more grumpy. I half expected a bollocking for using the boat to open the gate but none came, well Jeff preempted any such comment by saying that we just wanted to get through before they closed yet another canal! CRT bod grumpier still, good on Jeff who is normally fairly meek!

Anyway I am not entirely Lesbian-hating, some of my best friends are lesbians. It’s just the ones that stink of cat pee and have pubes in their teeth that I don’t like.
