we went through there in a 70'er with another full length coming up out of the first lock, with boats moored in the pound I don't know how I turned it the 90° turn without hitting either the moving boat or the moored one. Skill and natural talent. Don't be so modest. Either that or blind luck! probaly both. skill got me though the execution it but blind luck was on my side. it was tight. I knew the bend was there but not the other boat untill I was completely out of the lock. the crew of course were to busy packing and tidying up as we were on an Anderson boat.

Sheer skill? doubt it. still learning. but getting there. maybe raw talent😇 oddly last night I was called nervous, due to aborting an entry into the pontoon In the marina and doing a full spin and lining up again. got in without hitting the pontoon or our neighbour. I've mentioned the first effort when I stopped and was pushed across the marina and got pinned. I don't make that mistake now if I'm not lined up I go again. it did make me giggle. coming from a liveaboard who has never steered their own boat.

I've come along way though and all thanks to everyone after I have read many posts here and over their. I try new things all the time. I could now just about single hand after changing the way I moor to stopping and just bringing the rear in and stepping of myself.
of course before hand I only had what I was taught by hire companies.

I really miss Rachael's narrowboat handling tips on CWDF. I always used to enjoy her advice on steering, mooring, spring lines, locking and such like. They made me a much better boater.

The most useful was her very special way of very easily doing the swing-bridges on the L & L single handed (apart from the fact that she never shared that trick even after many promisses).
Skilled people like her, that are so willing to share their extensive experiences with beginners are hard to find .
Peter.

We're 1.5 days ahead of you, and draing the T&M as fast as we can to slow you down! Bats in Preston Brook Tunnel. Lots. We’re taking a day off in Manchester. Heading for Salford, imperial war museum etc. I am happy to see that you are stopping to see things on the way. When I read on Foxy's thread that they have been cruising for 11 hours in a day all I can think is, wasn't there something worth stopping for? For instance, Worsley looks like a lovely place to stop, at least overnight. If I ever get around to buying a boat I can cruise the network on I am sure I would want to stop and see places. I know it is each to their own, but sometimes I don't get it.

We occasionally do a big long day depending on the tide, this year was unusual in that we left Stanground on the Nene at 09:00 and were on the Great Ouse at Denver by 19:15, 29 ish miles with only a stop for two locks bar for Stanground and Salter Lode sluice which are manned. If it's am early tide we will do the 28 and a bit miles in a day to save a crack of dawn start from Upwell, if it's later than mid morning we stop after about 6 hours at Upwell, no point pushing it to sit around waiting for the tide. The rest of the time when we are not beholding to the tide w 5 - 6 hours max is far enough in a day.

Rochdale Canal - urgent update: Because of the serious shortfall in water supply, the closures on the Rochdale Canal have been brought forward and go into immediate effect. This involves the closure of all locks between Sowerby Bridge (Lock 1) and Littleborough (Lock 48). This includes the section between Locks 7 and 19, which it had been hoped to keep open on restricted opening times. The Canal and River Trust will liaise with boaters on this section so that they can access vital services when possible, offering restricted, controlled passage. Other than this all locks will be secured and out of use.

To leave Sowerby Bridge for Woodlesford (3 nights there to explore Leeds and visit a relation), to go to Gargrave and loiter there for 4 weeks to help out with bell ringing there, and explore the North-West Pennines (eg. We walked the Dales Way from Ilkley to Ribblehead, 40 miles), and then to make a non-stop (apart from sleeping) jump to Penkridge. Wake up, Duncan, or you'll be getting a toot! Rather a toot than a twat

Hopefully they will open before I need to go on a trip in September.

The Canal and River Trust will be refunding 50% of licence fees to boaters affected by all closures. With the kind Mr Fox standing as guarantor! You are Mr Fox and I claim my £280.

Which is quite often, last one was dealing with the saddleworth fire. they come over from the airfields in the east to Wharton, Preston, for servicing, follow the m62 over the hill then head NW for Wharton, takes them over us.
