As most here are aware the cost off diesel will be going up when the use of red diesel becomes illegal for leisure boating. I had read about it but it really only hit home when chatting with the marina manager at Bosworth whilst filling up today. He was saying their holding tanks will be cleaned out and refilled with the expensive stuff early 2019. He estimated a price of around £1.50 per litre.. yikes!

But surely it is only “illegal” while we are in the EU. Which won’t be for much longer. Allegedly...

A little mental arithmetic tells me it will cost me around an extra £800 for next years cruising. I suppose we have been lucky to get reduced diesel prices for this long.

Time to mug 'Remainers' for the difference in price! If they want the EU to dictate fuel prices, let them stump up! "Germany calling! Germany calling! Give us your money!"

Meanwhile in France....
"Nationwide protests continue for a second consecutive day on Sunday, November 18. In what is known as the "yellow vest" movement against fuel tax hikes, hundreds of thousands have participated in marches in cities across France since November 17, and have blocked major roads and highways. Tensions between motorists and protesters remain high; at least one person died after being struck by a vehicle and more that 400 have been injured in incidents. Officials indicate as many as 280 people were arrested. Traffic disruptions are expected to continue at least through the nighttime hours (local time) and clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out.
Context Demonstrations denouncing rising fuel prices and a planned fuel tax began on November 17 across France. Organizers of the so-called "yellow vest" movement called on participants to engage in slow-rolling protests to block roads and highways. Significant traffic disruptions in the vicinity of the demonstrations, including road blockades, were reported throughout the day, including on major highways and main roads in urban centers.
The government is planning a tax increase on fuel prices, including gasoline and diesel, beginning on January 1, 2019, to promote environmentally friendly practices."

The tax increase planned in France is 7 cents a liter after a 6 cent increase earlier in the year. When we came home in October diesel in the supermarkets was around 1.45 euro we will be able to do even less distance next year.(if they let us in) David

I noticed quite a lot of boatyards on the Thames are charging about £1.50 already. Makes sense really. Why bother with that silly 6/4 split or whatever it is. Pointless. More to the point is will the fuel boat man still be authorised to deposit 100 litres of diesel into your heating tank at the rebated rate ? and how would it be controlled anyway. Is anyone suggesting random tank dipping at locks and do they like dipping small day tanks.

I'll just be getting my red diesel in 20 litre drums from LCS in Coventry.

The change in rules from our eu friends is you must not put marked (red) rebated fuel into a tank that feeds a propulsion engine, and also that rebated fuel must be marked (usually red). So a fuel supplier will have to decide if they wish to sell, red or white diesel or buy a second system to be able to sell both. Can’t see many canal side suppliers making that sort of investment.

Our boat only has a single tank. We only run the diesel heater a few hours a year anyway so isn’t worth having a second tank fitted. Bosworth gave me the impression they will only be selling white diesel from next year.

Will be interesting to see if we all have to have our tanks cleaned out to allow for 'enforcement testing'.

Canalside or at least Riverside (Thames) suppliers already CBA. I just wonder if this will be a little boost for the fuel boats as the man on the boat has no way of knowing or giving a shit what you use the red diesel for. If he has arrived at your boat rather than you arrived at his its more than likely the fuel is going to be used for heating or electric. Maybe it will be a case of two fillers with labels.

I expect hmrc will dip as many tanks as boaters they currently challenge on the split they declare - basically none. HMRC will probably wait a couple of years for systems to self clean and then only check the piss takers. Can’t believe they will bother doing random checks given the far greater tax cheats they would like to be investigating without enough inspectors.
