What was gas oil in comparison at that time, kris ? I seem to recall it being 72-73p/lt again on 500lts. I was thinking of fitting a 500lt tank, but it's very difficult to find anyone who will deliver over water. Why can't you just arrange for a fuel tanker lorry/truck to pull up somewhere beside the canal/river and fill you up? I'm sure that's perfectly possible. One thing that annoyed me slightly is on Canalworld the thread about not being able to find diesel - someone in Stanley Ferry. For starters, you're a fuckwit for setting off with an empty tank, why wasn't it kept topped up? Secondly - buy a couple of fuel containers and walk to a petrol station - how difficult can it be? If too far a walk, take a taxi!

yes I've thought of getting a bundled tank that I could lift on and off my back deck. But then I don't use huge amounts of diesel. That would be good get a tank and lift it using a car crane or hijab.

We really could do with a time-machine. Somewhere amongst the Dunkley archives I think there are some old receipts from 'oiling-up' from Wiilow Wren's yard at Braunston in the 1960's. By that time the old Willow Wren Canal Carrying Co. had been re-formed into Willow Wren Canal Transport Services with all the boatmen self-employed, hiring their boats from the company, and being paid increased tonnage rates. The company charged 1s.10d (one shilling and 10 pence - a shade over 9p in today's money) per gallon for diesel, and we were all outraged when they put it up to 2 shillings a gallon (10p) in 1968. yes a time traveling device would be good. But I can think of better things to do with it than buy cheap diesel. Well, . . the diesel prices would just be one among many benefits from going, and staying, about 50 - 60 or so years back in time. Just think about all the other plus's, . . . no C&RT for starters, a good proportion of our inland waterways still performing the function they were created for, no Nick Norman, no Analworld Daniel H, no Richard Parry and all the other world class arseholes too numerous to mention, . . the gains would be endless !

Well, . . the diesel prices would just be one among many benefits from going, and staying, about 50 - 60 or so years back in time...... The service here gets worse and worse, don't you think? Aye, lad, things were different before these new-fangled changes. - Of course, you senile old git! - I was only agreeing with you. Yes, I suppose things were marvellous in the good old days (!) Four-year-old kiddies digging coal. Three-year-old kiddies also digging. I suppose you think that was terrific! I think old people are really boring! And the only reason you don't understand our music is that you don't like it! It's no wonder the country is in such a state! Why not hand the whole place over to Oxfam? It's all scroungers and old people! All clutching their Giros trying to get something for nothing. The Post Office is good at handing out other people's money! No wonder my grant's so small! There'll soon be rows of Biafran children queuing up for bowls of millet before they become Communists! - Excuse me! Hello. - Can I help you? That depends what I want! Ha! Completely over her head.

Before CRT people were moaning about BW. Can't remember when BW were formed but I'd bet that people were moaning about whoever was running it before that. The system is run down so needs a massive injection of cash. I am guessing this will come via private management and very significant increases in the cost of boat ownership. Some people pay several thousand pounds a year to have a boat. And they don't even live in it !!!

No matter, . . if he is that old, then going back around 60 years would make him the right sort of age for sending up chimneys to sweep them !

I had a day out in Limehouse once, they are a nice bunch too, especially after a few beers and were looking forward to escaping and joining thier loved ones.

When the oceans where teaming with life and just less regulations to deal with. Mass tourism hadn't started and there wasnt the homoginisation of culture so every place you visited would be different. Before the corporations got such a strangle hold on society and culture.

As I currently live in Limehouse I sometimes go to canary wharf. Zombie land. The City is the same. Zombie land.
Scary.
