I don't see why tribalism and hate HAVE to play any part. It's just a game. Rog They don’t have to. But the culture of football is that they do. As you say thuggery, racism and sectarianism do exist outside of football. But what football does is to normalise those behaviours - make them socially acceptable.

I understand that to a degree ... but why only or largely just football ?
By the way, how's Jeff doing ... hope the tension of worrying about how it's doing isn't worse than being wired up.

It's not 'just' football, aggression finds its way to the surface in all sorts of ways, but it's mostly passive aggression. Saturnalia is a necessary aspect of society. Similarly, few relationships never have a rough patch.

Rog Football obviously has mass appeal so it has a lot of political power. Here in Scotland we have a fairly authoritarian socialist government who have been quite strict on Covid, lockdown etc. But as soon as there is any bad behaviour associated with football, somehow Nicola can’t quite bring herself to condemn it. Because all those football supporters have votes that she needs. I think the same is true, but to a lesser extent, in England. Im at the gliding club this week doing the 100hr check on the tug, but Jeff is slowly getting acclimatised to his lack of lock-in. Being able to talk is a major bonus. But the eating thing is still a bit problematical due to the metal things still on his teeth. However he phoned me up tonight to say that one - the one that had been chafing the inside of his lips and giving him an ulcer - has miraculously suddenly fallen off! (Aka he got fed up with it and prised it off!). Jaw opening is better, improved from barely 1 finger to 1.5 fingers (normal is 3 fingers) and although there is still some jaw hinge pain it hast got any worse.

Glad Geoff is on the mend, physically and mentally.
With football. You get a crowd and let them drink and they will shout abuse, cause problems and possibly end up in a fight but you send that same crowd to the rose bowl and they can drink while watching the cricket and everyone will have a great time.
With saints. We rarely see trouble, I have noticed the few times there has been trouble has been against certain clubs where their fans might be more used to trouble.
Whether we are goaded into it or just somehow feel we have to be all hard when they are around I don't know.
On away days I've never seen any trouble involving our fans. Of course I've not been to certain grounds.
* I saw we, of course I don't mean me but parts of our fan base and that is a personal opinion and not on behalf of others.
