Cycle to work is open again so i will take part this year, looking at £1500 and will want to pick up two bikes, his and hers.
Folding would be good so they take up less space on the boat/in the car, but can live with non folding.
Only bit i don't really understand the differences are front/rear hub and full power or pedal assistance?
Anyone got any recommendations, within the price range mentioned above, or places to look?
Not interested in kits at all.

First look around it its looking £750 doesn't get you a lot!

I might be interested in one of your folders if you decide to go that route.

Front hubs can spin out and lose traction on gravel etc, rear hub not. You won't get "full power" if I think you mean what you think you mean. To be legal it's limited to 250w 15mph pedal assistance, power comes on when you pedal, ghost pedalling, no effort, keeps the power on. That is sometimes called cadence assist. The other is torque assist, it adds power to your pedalling, multiplies your effort, ghost pedalling without any effort doesn't work. I don't know if a folder would have that anyway. It probably won't have a throttle. Kits can come with throttles, mine has a 1/4 turn thumb lever, legality debatable. There will be a control screen or summat to set power levels and see battery state. On mine I can change between 3, 5, 9 levels, they are just steps between low and maximum power. I set mine to 9, I can economise on power that way.

As far as I know you can't add your own cash.

I might be interested in one of your folders if you decide to go that route. Gill has a nice white one, lady type, can have it for free* if you send pics with rainbow tassels, speedos whilst blasting through Gay street in Manchester on it? *not true

Cheap folding ebikes are a bit dodgy. I know of one case where the hinge snapped unexpectedly. Not during riding it was while folding the bike.
I would definitely go for a rigid type if it's cheap and if you can accommodate it.
Ok so the battery slotting inside the down tube seems a good design but of the hinge breaks the thing is unusable and rather awkward to repair.
The bike in question was purchased from Charles Sterling who like all the good suppliers buys Chinese gear of questionable quality and sells it under a British company.

Maybe that means you should oil the hinge every now and again.

Both of those you have linked are crap, you’ll be lucky to get 10 miles from the battery. The blokes Carreras are quite good, (but not folding) I’ve got the latest one and am happy with it. We had the ladies Vulcan for other half, but she didn’t like it. So sold it and bought a kudos folder which has a throttle and everything. I’m really impressed with this after opting for a bigger battery that gives about 60 miles on a charge. Don't buy one with a front wheel drive, they are deadly in winter. Get a crank drive or rear hub. The crank drives are really easy to derestrict, the rear hubs are not.

Are folding bikes easy to fold? .. I don't have room for proper bike at mine and although I'm not so keen on cycling I do keep thinking it might be a good idea. Did have a bike but little sis took it off my hands and my next one I gave away...it was always storage issue

easy enough to actually fold, but can be tricky to handle, even more so when having to get through the boat doors.
