Must confess, we've always had ours blacked for us. I fancied doing it ourselves but Jane didn't, so as usual we compromised and did what she wanted. My Mum had ugly kids not stupid ones We live on board, so see the work being done (very thoroughly) and we do the gunnel down and bow and stern paintwork whilst it's out. We have been fortunate with the weather thus far. When I first bought the boat I was advised that if I intended blacking every two years (best practice) then bitumen would be fine. If I intended leaving the boat longer, a better quality product would be required. I have stuck with bitumen and two yearly so far. Rog

The best coatings at our place are Flag AF as used on about a dozen boats including two steel boats. The old Blake's (now Hempel) AF is crap as is International cruising inland. I've never seen anyone use epoxy on their boats and can't think of one already done. The other that works but frightens the life out of me is the elderly thin hot tarred steel lifeboat, I'll take a picture of it when I next go down.

I've often wonder why antifoul isn't used more on steel boats on the inland waterways. Perhaps it wouldn't be great for the wildlife if the self eroding type were used. I must admit I gave up using antifoul on out grp boat a number of years back, but usually have to scrape it twice a year to get rid of the barnacles

There is so many to choose from it can be difficult! None are as good since the nasty stuff had been removed though!
