Get Trump and miniTrump for about £24 if you can afford. The little one is higher pitched, the big one is proper foghorn noise!

I didn't get any of that. Are you trying to write Finnish in morse? Time to call Inspector Morse for a translation I think: . .-.. .-.. - - - , . .-.. .-.. - - - , . .-.. .-.. - - -

This diversion into Morse is actually on topic, as the signals can be made visually by letter flags, as well as by horn signals, which are Morse code for the relevant letters. (Even less applicable to canals, though!)
---... -....- --.--.- which is a bit ambiguous !

_._._ (CT) (commencement signal) .._ _.. (?) ._ _ _ .._ _. (w t f) .. ... (is) _ _ _... (8E ?)(OS ?) ._ ._. (AR) (end of transmission) _._ (K) (invitation to transmit) colon hyphen parenthesis : - ) or :- ( which is where the ambiguity comes in. E.T.a. Just realised I put a extra dash in the last character, which makes it even more ambiguous!

Well well! The horn signals chart has been posted in boaters update, available to download. No excuse now, I'd better learn them.
