I met Venus at the bend in Worsley last summer. I told him I know a song about his boat. I have no respect, I know π . Isn't what you were thinking of more of a rhyme than a song ? . . . something like - " Twas on the good ship 'Venus', by God you should have seen us etc. . etc. I can't remember anything like all the many verses but there was that went :- The first mateβs name was Cropper His dick it was whopper Once round the deck, twice round his neck And up his arse for a stopper. The cabin boy was Kipper A naughty little nipper He stuffed his bum with chewing gum And vulcanised the skipper

The song you know is that the original one of the late 60's by a group of patriots of mine named "Shocking Blue" or the more recent copy by "Bananarama" ?
Peter.
I had been trying to remember the name of the original band for ages, they had a great female singer. It came up in conversation with some guys in the boatyard, they were talking about the Bananarama version that they were insisting were the original. I knew they weren't and the original version was streets better but for the life of me I couldn't remember who it was. Yes John, she was a good singer, and she was a rather pretty girl too, her name was "Mariska Veres", she had beautiful eyes, and looked rather sexy when she was a member of "Shocking Blue". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mariska_Veres
This girl never smoked, she didn't drink alcohol and never bothered with drug either, but very sadly she died of cancer anyway at the age of only 59.
Peter.

I'd never heard the "Venus" songs the 2 Tony's just listed here, possibly because they didn't win any awards, but they should have, as they are very good and quite amusing too.
Peter.

The boat is John Parke & Sons Ltd short boat 'PLATO', carrying I presume general cargo and the era is around the early 1900's. She was still around when the coal carrying ceased in 1964.

As a child in the seventies I remember 3 or 4 wooden boats of this type moored up at Mayors Yard in Tarleton, over the years they just rotted into the canalπ

Nice pictures.
I really like seeing rotten old boats by the canal. I think that should be a standard way of disposing of old boats so they can still be seen. Obviously they'd need securing so they are not a hazard but it seems so much better than breaking up and binning historic boats.

Ex Parkes's Fleet after B W purchase 1963 were all burned at the Stake (in there case at Martland Mill) near Wigan. One still survives at Ellesmere Port, but I have not seen it for a few years. Photos indicate it is sunk trying to preserve some of the timbers. That boat is 'Scorpio'.

I have it on very good authority that this is actually 'Ambush' just before Derek purchased her and before her plastic roof was removed!!π± After Ambush, MaryC ? Then Rowan Became the resident Partyboats operating from Burscough Bridge To Parbold!
